Hoping there is still time for ripening

Just some pics of figs that are starting to ripen.
What a long slow cool summer it has been.
The Grimo BT has ripened the end of July other years.
Everything is a month or more delayed.
The unknown notMM and the uknown Portuguese did ripen late into cooler weather last year.
Hoping they do the same this year.
Don't know how the VDB or Petite Negri will turn out.
Hopefully the RDB still has time.

I hope all have time to ripen, nice figs, nice varieties. Good luck especially with the RdB.

Looking good Grant, I sure hope we have some decent weather next couple weeks.

Good luck

Nelson

Hope the weather holds out for you.
I had to move the trees with figs inside today as the weather forecast is -1*C tonight.

Brrrrrrrrrrr!!!!! Too cold Sam.

Grant, Nice figs and I like the photos with the labeling!
Are any of these figs planted in ground?

Thanks, Nelson
the pics did turn out well.  Makes them look a lot better than they do live.
Yes I hope there is more time to ripen, Waynea
Sam, the forecast is for low of 2C friday night, so I will probably wrap some in frost cloth just to make sure.
But the daytime temps are supposed to stay warm enough.
None of these are in ground Pino.
I do have a Natalina in ground, and it has a couple of figs on it,
but it is weeks behind the potted one.
It will be interesting if the in ground tree does ripen because even in the green state the figs look different.
the green is much darker, towards black, than the potted one.

Your figs look like they are getting there.  The weather forecast looks good with lots of sun lets hope it stays nice.

My in-ground black figs are finally starting to ripen I got my first black fig tonight.  Had 2 Stella the other night.  This is what makes all the hard work worthwhile:)

Just updating the progress.
RDB did ripen. Sorry no pic, it was tastey. very berry and sweet. A couple more left on plant so will try to remember to take a pic before I eat the next one.
Grimo Natalina is swelling and changing colour but not doing the droop. ?
Grimo BT ripening nicely, also sweet and tastey,
The uknown not MM is also ripening, tried one, it was a little early, I'm holding for one that at least appears ripe now to get a taste.
Petite Negri from EL swelling and changing colour, no droop yet.
VDB not doing much of anything.
The unknown Portugese is not showing any signs of ripening.
a few surprises.... LSU Purple swelling and changing colour, so might get a late season taste.
Also a Brunswick swelling and starting to change colour, thanks Akram.

Grant,
Thanks for sharing the Pictures and info.
I'm also hoping for a little more warmth. I've got several cultivars ripening now, but the nights have been in the 40's F. with day temps in the 60's F., with 3 nights dipping into the 30's F.

BTW, My VDB and LSU Purple EL are doing the same as yours. Good Luck.

Hi Pete,
yes I thought I would share the info, because it seems worthwhile to know which varieties will still produce tastey fruit into coolness of autumn,
even if it might no be on par with fruit ripened in heat of summer.

Grant,
Thanks.
The only tree thats currently producing figs on par with those ripening in warmer weather is Champagne.

Grant, Wonderful job on growing these figs successfully in zone 5!

Many of my new trees are just now producing figlets.  I know they will not ripen.  :(

Looking good Grant, how is your Panachee doing?  Mine is still quiet slow with this weather and not ripening, I am hoping you have good luck with it this year.

Good luck, Grant.  And here's hoping that you (along with all of us here in the northeastern extremes of North American fig growing) get the warm weather needed to ripen those figs!  I've six or seven trees that are loaded, and are just on the verge of ripening.  VDB, RDB (already ripened a bunch, but lots more), Conadria, Aubique Petite, Peter's Honey, Petite Negri.  There are others here, but much as you have, so have I got a bunch that are oh-so-close.  Fingers crossed that you get the warm days ahead!

Mike   central NY state, zone 5a

Looks good Grant! I'm definitely taking notes on which ones have done well given our crappy summer. So far I've had the following ripen for me (all potted):Niagara Black, Colasanti White, Black Bethlehem, Hardy Chicago, BMvs, RdB, an U/K yellow (first for me that dripped honey), Danny's Delight and some brebas from Vincenzo and an U/K Italian. Right now my Kadota and Pingo de Mel (likely the same) are both swelling along with Noire de Coromb and LSU Gold. My Panachee was one of the first to put on figs this year but they have just sat idle for the last month and I've almost lost hope they will swell any time soon lol. I have some Valle Negra and Black Ischia that are still hard and green. VdB and looks like it should be swelling soon hopefully.
Tyler

Tyler, you have a nice collection of figs!
Would you be so kind as to post a photo(s) of your Noire de Coromb leaf and fruit?
Thanks

Thx. Pino.. I'll take a pic tonight.

Hi'
Thanks for the info on the Champagne, Pete. Sounds like a variety to have in the north.
Chivas, the Panachee is growing well. Just like all the others it got off to a slow start. I left 3 figs on it, but do not expect the weather to be warm long enough for them to ripen.
You can see them in the backround of the RDB pic in my original post.
Thanks Mike, I'll need a bit of luck. I think your luck will be better, Though we are in same climate zone with you being farther south, your days will stay longer and warmer and your winter will come later.
Tykler, it seems your figs are doing great. My N.B. only started putting on figs in mid august... too late to ripen so I remove them. the Colosanti white lost most of its leaves in middle of summer so the figs it did have on have not done well. Is that the hardy chicago from me? if so it does way better for you than the mother plant does for me. It is on my cut list. my MBvs has not produced any figs, maybe next year.

update, culled all but one fig off the Grimo Natalina. Went out to take a few off to give the rest a better chance to ripen. they were barely holding onto the stem, some falling off as I culled others ... insipid would be the word to describe the taste.

Also noticed the lone Osborne Prolific fig is swelling and colouring,  again thanks Akram.

Grant,
You're welcome.
Here's a few pictures taken earlier today...
Champagnefigs Ripening_9-27-14.jpg LSUPurplefigsRipening_9-27-14.jpg .

There are at least 4 dozen Champagne figs swelling at the same time on the 2-1/2 year old tree and 3 figs on the LSU Purple that was purchased in a 4" pot in May of this year.  If the weather holds out I may also taste my first Wuhan which is just starting to swell and change color.

<9-28-14>
Picked the Wuhan today, It fell off in my hands... Bland tasting, hopefully it will be better next year.
