How are you ending the year?

This year I'm ending the year by transplanting two started cuttings from cups to pots. I think it's a great way to end the year. The two I'm potting are Sal's EL and an Adriatic called "Spicewood" because of where it was found.

Both seem to be doing well although the Adriatic suffered a little water damage to it's leaf during all the Christmas rush. It's pushing more now and they look good.

May the year end on a great note and may next year all your wishes and dreams come true.

Hi all
just finished bagging up cuttings I received today Thanks Bill.
only fig nuts would end the year this way,Ya all have a happy and safe new year
Jim

Let's just say I'm ending it the old fashioned way.

I've spent the last couple days shaping trees, taking cuttings, cleaning cuttings, and bagging cuttings as trees go dormant. Have a lot more to do, but need a couple nights of cold weather to help about half of them along. They are taking their sweet time this year. Not much of party hound myself, but no judgment on those who do. Good looking starts, Gene.

Gene,

Your Sal's is looking real good, Gene.  Best of luck with it.

My little Malta Black air layer decided to sprout out and begin growing, as well as the Black Madeira.  I'll just let them do their thing.  It'll be warm before we know it.

I have a full-spectrum bird light for when I had the little parrots.  Is that good enough to use as a grow-light for plants?  I have a sunny window I can put the little tomato plant in, but a light would probably be better for it.

Thanks,

noss

Checked everything after 7" of rain. So far so good. Should be about 39F tonight. I know, big deal, but it is cold for here. Checked new cuttings in the greenhouse and they are looking good. Black Madeira air-layers are looking great. Started some passion fruits cuttings. Filled all my trash cans with leaves and other garden detritus. Pruned the dead leaves off the bananas. Pruned Boysenberries and grapes. Sold some plants. Yeah, we have to do those things this time of year. We don't have a couple feet of snow to hide everything. Oh, and added another 100 pix at Figs 4 Fun. All in all, a good day: 53F and sunny.

Tomorrow, me, the couch and football. Plus family and friends.

it's still almost 60F outside here in Atlanta ;)

After hitting 27 degrees earlier in the week, we are now in the 70's. Talk about a swing in temps. I still have a couple of young trees that haven't gone dormant. I move them inside went the temps fall below 30. Hopefully next year they will be on track.

Gene, I was talking with JD about this in private message the other day, the three of us are in the same boat. Three weeks ago, 80% of my trees were still not dormant.

After temps in the teens and nonstop being in the garage, all but four of my trees are dormant (out of ~60). Conadria, Gino's Blk, Voiture and Negronne are still holding on for dear life.

Hey Gene, how did Spicewood produce for you last year?  Mine gave me a couple of figs.  This year...it has already doubled in height---winterized it inside my garage.

Hi Dennis,
Llast year was not a growing year for me. I just kept things alive. The wife had a knee replacement and that became an almost full time job all the way through October. In fact she's not 100% yet but at least she is able to do just about everything for herself. So because of the situation all I did was water a little and give them a little MG a couple of times over the summer. I did get to move many 1 gallon plant up to 3 gallon pot and Spicewood was one. It didn't bear any figs, but it is growing nicely now. I plan to put it in the ground soon.

I did start a bunch of cuttings last spring and most are doing well although I did lose some to the gnats. I have just started my cuttings for this year and so far everything looks great. I'm about to get a new batch out of the fridge and get them going. I only have a few this year, maybe 15.

How did your figs taste, anything like the J.H. of any other Adriatic. I curious but I guess I might find out this year if all goes well. I have about 70 that I will be putting in the ground at my friends house where he has some unused pasture land. I would have started this week end but the rains hit pretty hard. So it will be soon I hope.

Take care my friend and let's hope for a dry ripening season this year,

Hello Gene,
You and the wife will be in my prayers.  My tree is spreading out like an octopus!  Last year....well, it was not a good year for figs in my climate either.  Some varieties did not produce and many did.  As for fruit from my SPicewood, I got one long dark green dark red interior fig.  My tree is in a bad pot.  My tree is growing weird.  By the way it's spreading, I think I'm gonna plop it in a larger pot and cut the pot out from around it.  The figs taste pretty close to my JH Adriatic.  I need more figs to taste for a better comparision.  I started a handful of cutting 2 months ago.  All but 2 made it and now they are in the GH taking a sun bath.

I still got trees inside my garage!!!!   I'm waiting for my new deck to be finished so I can move all out.   I'm getting ready to start 100 or so cuttings this weekend.  I use to start all my cuttings in Jan/Feb but learned it's best to wait and do it all outside away from the gnats.  Keep me posted on how your tree grows.  I'll post pictures of my tree after I get it repotted.

cheers,

Dennis,
Thanks you for the prayers. I just went out and checked out my tree. During some hard rain and wind the root ball got soft in the pot and the tree leaned over real bad so I'll have to repot and straighten. Well maybe not as it will go into the ground soon. It is about 3 foot tall and has a side limb almost as tall. I will probably air layer the side branch or use it for cuttings this winter.

I've started a few assorted cuttings 6 weeks ago and have them all potted up, so now I will start the rest of my cuttings. I only have about 25 this year. I started around 100 last year which was a little too many. I doing it a little different this year and if it as successful as the first one's I'll post a report. It sure has simplified the process for me.
