How cold is too cold?

  • jtp

It's supposed to get down to 37 degrees here tonight. Should I tarp up the figs outdoors or bring them inside? In the past, tarping has been fine for my citrus trees on the South-facing cement slab, but I don't want to take chances with my new figs.

We had a very mild winter, and then it dropped to near freezing a few weeks ago, after most of my figs had started leafing out. I covered them all, but still lost the foliage on almost all of them. No big deal--they're all shooting out new leaves again.

John...    80 miles north of your place (Wilmington), we will have two nights of 32/37 F.
In New Bern, I am sheeting my outside, under two year old, Figs.
All have nice leaves, no need to set them back!!  Fred

At this time, anything (solid) above freezing-temperatures or frost should be OK...

Better safe than sorry. Sounds like I have some work to do this afternoon/evening. Thanks.

It got to about 34 this morning and the Negrone and unknown got hit with frost everything else (4 inches away) got nothing, does anybody know how well Negronne takes frost?

We were supposed to be down to 37 last night.  I wants going to break my back moving everything in.  I haven't looked outside yet to assess if any damage.  We got down to 34 earlier this spring and I had slight foliage damage but no loss. My trees are in a southeast sun-drenched corner that radiates heat, though.

I gathered the fig pots to the South side and tarped them with the citrus trees and lemon verbena. I then stuck old nursery pots over the tomatoes, bananas and peppers. Looks like everything is fine. And I didn't have to bring anything inside. We should be good now. Nighttime temps are supposed to be in the 50s and 60s after this.

I had not too bad of damage, mostly the unknown got hit the hardest, the negrone lost any leaves it had coming out but the terminal bud is still green with no spots, the black maderia lost the top most leaves but the breba on the bottom is safe and half of one panachee lost expanded leaves so I would say I got lucky for now but next year a greenhouse would help.  The VdB about 2 feet from the negrone did have a damaged leaf only a single one, all the brebas are fine so I was very excited to see it is fairly resistant to frost, it is the only one that doesn't have distorted leaves from  the cold temperatures, only distorted leaves from fmv, still this will be the next one in the ground.
