How fast a well establish tree grow?

The first picture was taken a year ago. I pruned heavily in winter. The tree break dormancy at the end of April. It's about half-way of the grow season. The new green branch is already 3-4 ft long! Not to mention the weather is cold in May, rainy in June, and extremely hot in July. I won't surprise if any of these new branch reach 10 ft by winter.

Figs generally grow fast.  Yours is not uncommon.  Hope you get lots of figs from it.

Planted in the right spot (full sun) and in good soil, figs can grow very large, fast. IMO, No other fruit trees can grow fast as figs do, in a single season.

Navid.

Navid,

A peach might give a fig a run for it's money.  Have some that went from a single twig to a 10' wide canopy in a year and 20' in 2 years......but the figs will go from rooted cutting to I hope 8 feet tall in one season so it is a close race.  Makes figs so rewarding to grow as opposed to my persimmons that may grow 4" a year lol.

Your tree put on some serious growth. Looks full of figs too!

I tried to grow many fruit trees in the past. Nothing is as rewarding as fig trees. Besides, it's virtually maintenance free, except watering and pruning. Since fig tree grow so well in ground, I just put about 50 little trees (all different varieties) in ground now.
Actually, I want to do this earlier, but my wife insist that she wants to grow peony in the front yard (a perfect SE spot that receive full sun). She spend almost $1,000 to buy dozens of 5 year old roots. After 4 months, most of the peony died, or just 2-3" high. She now gave up and let me use the front yard because she saw my fig trees are growing beautifully, and I receive a lot of order.

Hi Jimmy Peonies are nice have fond memories with grandmother picking them in her Chicago backyard to bring to Cemetery.
They always came back year after year for her with red ,white and pink colors in display .
The ants love them though !

Willis,

You are right. Peaches, Plums, Nectrines and other Stone Fruits can give a fig, run for its money. But they all susspectible to numerous fungal and bacterial diseases. I grow several types of the stone fruits, and know how fast they can grow, but they will succumb to diseses. This is not the case with figs. Maybe I should of been more clear, and mentioned the disease resistance of the figs, as well in my earlier post. Also, no other types of fruit trees will produce when they are young (less than 1-2 years old), figs do. Several of my Plums have not produced at all. I had grafted them on 'Standard' rootstock 4 and 5 years ago. They have produced no flowers or no fruits during those years. Each season, they grow 10 feet or so, but no fruits. And now all of them (Plums, Nectrines and Cherries) have the shot- hole fungus and defoliating. Nothing like that happening with figs.

Navid.

Navid,

Well no arguing with that....by far the figs are easier.   Not to rub salt in your wounds but my plums bloomed and produced fruit 12 months after being planted.  Granted we have a very long growing season here and can only grow a couple types of plums but still.  I figure on the peaches about 7-8 years here and they are dead or in decline....figs will live on for who knows how long.

Wills,

No arguing on my behalf either. Few of my Plums did flowered this year, but they got zapped by low 20s temp., during the last week of April. Same thing with happened with Nectrines. In Fall, I will puomelet some of the Nectrines and Plums. If I was in a warmer climate such as yours, all the figs would be planted in ground. For now almost all, will be kept in containers and few in ground.

Navid.

My peach tree flowers a lot this year, Last month, still have many little peach on the tree. But this month, only two left on the tree and biten by insects. they rot before ripe. I won't expect any yield the rest of the year. However, I can harvest fig from July all the way to October.

Navid,

Not to mislead or anything I only got 2 plums from one tree and 4 plums on the other but still I was happy with that.   Yep all my figs are in ground..in fact 17 more varieties are going in the ground today:)

Here is a picture of 2 of the 17 month old peach trees taken this morning...and yes I need to mow the yard:)

Jimmy,

You are right....while the peaches produce just a short window of time the figs give me fruit for months without having to spray them with poison.
