how long before the fig will come to its full taste?

i know that some figs will take up to 5 yrs before giving its full taste profile, or so i have heard. i know that figs will improve with age from experience. but there are few figs that are just good from the first yr they put on the figs. some takes 1 or two yr to give great taste. some.. 4-5 yrs.

a question... those figs which are good from the start.. do they improve further as they get older? or is there a point where they will reach their max potential and no longer improve? personally, i don't see how VdB can improve any further. i heard many saying Black Madeira from the 1st yr on is just amazing.

Pete, I can speak for the RdB breba this year on a three year old tree. I just finished off the second fig and I don't see how
it could improve much if any. I hope to try the BM later this summer as my three year old tree has 15-20 small figs now.

Yes they will improve, every year till they are 7 years old and that is their top taste.
But of course if in some years you have 20 inches of rain in July and August ,in those years the fruits will not be at their best quality and taste will suffer.
Yet again ,an older tree will make ,more satisfactory fruits,in those bad years, one reason is because the fruits will be growing at much higher distance from the soil line and so,it can fight the rain better, and the wind will dry the rain off the fruits faster, and that will make a difference.

Pete in my case there container grown which expedites plant in yard.
First season for growth 2nd season gives me good idea of what to expect and the 3rd season lets me know for sure and if not up to my palate it gets burned.

Hardy Chicago, Violet de Bordeaux, Madeira, Dark Port, Ronde , Ischia Black, Sals to name some i knew from very first fig produced and perhaps a little bit improvement afterwards but none was needed.

The 1 taste profile i truly miss is the one of Pastiliere gave me i still can almost taste it !
That tree suckered me into keeping it, then i eventually burned it in an ongoing extra hot fire i never was so mad at fig tree because it tasted wonderful .

Some are good from day one. Some need a couple years, and some more. "Encanto" was a seedling and didn't even get it true shape and color till it was nearly 10 years old. I don't think I have ever had one that got worse with age, and have always said don't judge by the first year's fruit because some do need to gain a little age.

Since so many things affect flavor, weather, water, fertilizer, inground vs in pot, etc. you can't really take any one year as the measurement. Some might be better in later years because the weather was warmer than previous years.
