How long in Vermiculite?

Jon,
How long can I keep my rooted and sprouted cuttings in vermiculite. They are doing very well but I don't have the time right now to pot them. I also have to find space for them once they are potted in soil. Can I delay this for a couple of months?

Peg

Peg,

Most likely, yes, as long as they have sufficient moisture and humidity.

Thanks, Jon.

I have another rooting question not important enough to warrant its own topic. Do you think with the baggie/paper towel method it is better for the fig root area to be dark, or doesn't it matter? I have seen lots of roots growing up the sides of clear cups so my impression is it doesn't matter but I wanted to verify.

I am seeing my first roots today after a week in the baggie. I had a lot of past failures but this time around I put a thermometer in it for constant temperature monitoring and I have the temp exactly at 75F. Before I put the thermometer in it turns out it was far too hot, more like 90F! I didn't realize how hot the top of my coffee machine was. Without the thermometer I would have had yet another fig rooting failure.

Scott

Scott, don't think light is an issue, as long as thery are not in direct sunlight (which will also cause overheating).

Scott,  Have to laugh - I just had a similar experience.  I started a few bagged cuttings on top of my computer monitor yesterday.  In plain sight and nice and warm.  I put a themometer on there this morning and it read 92 degrees!  I wouldn't have guessed that it was that warm.
