How long to break dormancy?

This past fall after a few nights of frost and leaf drop I put 3 yr old potted Petite Negrone, HC, and Italian Ever Bearing into an insulated but unheated wooden shed with blacked out windows for storage. I watered about every 4-5 weeks and checked on them periodically. The soil never froze. The lowest temp night time we had was 2 degs. for 1 night and a spell of low 20's for a week or so. The rest of the winter was fairly mild - low 30's.
They were put outside April 20 and I have not seen any new growth on them or the 2 Russian Poms.  Stem scratching indicates a bit of green and I cut back all the seemingly dead branches quite a bit until I reached green cambium. Is this unusual? Is there still hope that these will leaf out? A friend, to whom I gave an Italian EB has his all leafed out. Mine are BARE! They look just the same as when I placed them in the shed in Nov.
All my cuttings were set out May 10 and are growing like mad some with a few with small figs but nothing on the established figs.

My sister from Oakland, CA is having the same trouble with her Kathleen Black I gave her.  If you have green cambium the tree's alive.  Wait and fertilize.

Hi Rich,

After growing potted figs and storing close to 40 different fig trees in an unheated garage I have 6 that are still dormant in fact there are two that I have all but written off for dead. This is the first time
that this has happened to this many.Overall we had a mild winter compared to usual tough New England winters, though It was a prolonged winter with the early part of spring be pretty frosty.I don't have an explanation for this but,A fig trees seem to have a life of Its own, maybe these six don't like the neighborhood or there neighbors which include figs and other fruit trees like cherries, and persimmons.
Next season I'm going to wrap them up with old blankets for the winter.

Good Luck
Geo

what's the night temp? as long as it's above 40, it should leaf out. how long have they been in the same soil? are the roots putting out new growth? yesterday, i pulled my Calvert, going in 2nd yr, out to repot. it was very clear to see new roots growing out. so was Figo Preto. if roots are ok, i would keep nurse it. maybe this crazy temp fluctuation is not agreeing with you trees. check if the soil is compacted or not... if the roots are getting water and air.

I'm having the same problem with my panachee's, both died back a bit this past winter, I do see green when I slice into the lower bark so I guess it's a waiting game. good luck with yours Rich.

I had a "dead " one from last year, it started to leaf out about 2 weeks ago. I was going to toss it out but didn't get around to it :)

Just give it some time.

I have the same problem with my atreano, Lsu gold, and 2 sal c's one of the sal's is just starting to sprout leaves so that's a good sign.

I have an unknown that I pruned back a lot because I was moving and it still didnt sprout. I have been able to see the buds under the skin trying to break through for over a month now. Between the severe pruning to the tree and roots and the lousy job I did protecting it this winter I'm surprised its still alive.
