I get the impression many of you love fig trees.

How many varieties do you have?
How many fig trees do you have total?
How many in containers vs ground?

I'm just curious. Personally I have 1 in ground but many in pots. Everyone is young so it'll be interesting to see how my lay out changes as they get bigger.

Last time I checked, I had 14 varieties. All in containers. About 30 plants in total.

This sounds like the beginnings of Figaholics Anonymous/True Confessions...65 varieties, 12 in the ground and the rest in 15 gal or 5 gal pots

Only because I must have the greatest restraints or my wanton ways will get the best of me, I now have, all, growing in containers, only four varieties...but soon, to add a fifth to the collection.

They are:

"Golden Atreano"- Belleclare
"Red Italian"...local, ethnic unknown variety from Mount Vernon, NY
"Black Marseilles" VS
"Kathleen's Black"

Know this...If I had a larger growing area, I would have a very large number of varieties, just like most of the forum members.  Honestly, fig trees are really the only fruit tree that I would bother growing.  More bang for the buck.

How many varieties do you have? - Just some dark types and a few chimera's

How many fig trees do you have total? - hmm i ran out of fingers and toes darn it. New i should have stood in school.

How many in containers vs ground? - 1 in each container , think i still have 1 inground unless Rafed came with his hook.

I honestly don't know. A goldilocks amount...More than some, many fewer than others..... but just right for me. :)

Most will go in the ground and be kept trimmed as bushes. Some will be in large terra cotta pots as edible ornamentals.

only 2 varities -- Vern's brown turkey and Desert King

However i have 3 plants in total with all in pots.  I would get more but i live in Vancouver BC and this isnt the greatest climate for figs.  I'll probably buy a negronne if i locate one.

7 in ground 26 in pot are going in ground next year. 33 varieties 60-70 all together.

About 73 varieties and this is after giving away most of the light colored variants last year. Many more will be given away to friends and relatives latter this year. Few planted in ground and the rest are kept in containers (3-35 gallons).

About 14 - 17 varieties, all in pots, My favorite that I've had for about a month is starting to take off (3 new leaves sprouting ,,,,,finally!!). There's no mistaking what the leaf looks like so I'll let you all try to guess, I promise to tell you if you're getting hot or Cold. lol

 All my figs have been exposed to  FMV,some have it, some don't. It doesn't seem to bother them so it doesn't bother me.

At least 75 here at the house, and roughly 120 planted within an hour of Atlanta.  I've done a LOT of rogue planting in the last 3 years.

I have about 10 varieties and 8 unknowns. All "unknowns" are in ground, all my known varieties are also in ground. I have three on the way...soon!!!

I have 38 potted up to healthy 1 gallon size.
I have 200 in various stages of rooting in water,moss, air layers,soil
All in pots
All came from 21 different parent trees located in Marshall Tx, and 1 from Gainesville Fla, my first tree

4 different currently ID'D

I look for legacy trees and pass on rooted trees to children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren of the original tree owners, of course keeping some for myself.

Have not sold any

Oh jeeze, you had to make me count and confront my addiction, dam you...I have at least 104 varieties and close to 200 trees...only 2 (Panachee and Paradiso) in ground but planning to put around 50 varieties in the orchard next year.

Currently around 35 varieties, around 45 total trees.  (I can't actually go count right now, so I'm not as beset with angst as Sue seems).  Only 4 in ground, but hoping to try some additional cold hardy ones in ground when they get a little older.

(And I guess I just broke Dominick's Rule, as I shall henceforth refer to it... although I don't think I've broken my corollary to it  :-)

Yes, winter protection.  I've been burying them each fall, and exhuming them in the spring (after typical threat of killing frost is past).  I'm experimenting with other kinds of protection for in ground trees... haven't yet found a good alternative.  (But hoping to find a less labor-intensive way).  Some people with an appropriate setup here get them to survive by covering with insulation and quilts/blankets/rags, but that seems to only work if they have a good southern exposure wall, with a wind block on the west.  Potted trees are more common in this climate.

(and I see you're looking for cold hardy trees... I got a Marseilles Black VS that I'll try in ground when it gets older and bigger, and hoping to try Tenica next year for eventual in ground attempt).

Ive been thinking about my winter protection. I think Im going to put tomato stakes in the ground and get some insualted foam board and build a box.  Will staple it to the tomato stakes. I cant imagine that wouldn't protect them from the wind and big temp fluctuations.
