How many cuttings can you handle at once?

Ok, as I'm sitting here reading everyone's post on starting cuttings, trading and all the other good things about starting more and different kinds  of figs for you personal collection. I was thinking about how many cuttings I have going, plus what I'm still waiting to be shipped to me, wow I have a lot cuttings going. I'm not saying I have a lot of different kinds, maybe 15 or so different kinds but a lot of those cuttings going. I have not counted them but when all said and done, maybe 100. Now I'm still looking for more!!!

Sounds like a bad case of Fig Fever !

I have 57 varieties going.  I'm caring for over 150 cuttings right now.  120 have rooted so far.  18 of those are in 1 gallon pots.  Over 50 left in sphagnum moss, expected to root within 14 days.
No clue how in the hell I'm going to manage them this year.  I'll be giving lots to my brother, whom lives in town.  The good part is that I won't be in tears if a few don't make it.  I do hope I get at least 1 of each variety though.
Yes, it will be a busy year.

and the  Fever spreads  :-)

Would that be BEFORE or AFTER the nervous breakdown? I'm coming close to the limit of what I can handle. All the sunny windows are lined up solid with pots and some are on tables. I'm trying to keep them in natural light but very soon I'll have to use lights for some that are starting to leaf out. I was not planning on starting any this year but.....things change and the rest is history.

Fig Fever heads north from VA to PA
where/who is next ?

:-)

If I answered that question there is a good chance my spouse might run me through the chipper and fertilize the yard. However, that doesn't stop me from posting a wish list. :-)
We are all nuts(or at least I am).

This place is just a big support group...in more ways than one.  ;)

Haa!  My fig fever is only limited by my glimpses of sanity attempting to reach me through the fever haze to slap some sense into me because my husband is in on the fig obsession also. :P  That said....I still have a bit of room...lol

I'm up to about 160 now and still doing some more for a while longer tonight.  I have added about 70 varieties this year.  I think I've lost at least two.  I have about 70 potted up into gallon or 4" x 12" treepots while the rest are in earlier stages.  I could handle more but even this is going to be a challenge to figure out where I'll eventually plant.

Fig Fever spreads to the West Coast,
land of FMV  :-)

CDC is ready to declare a Pandemic

I started too soon!!  I don't have nearly as many as some others - not to mention any names Frank, Harvey and Fespo - makes me wonder how many Jack has going on!  I have about 16 in 16oz cups, 11 in 32oz deli containers, about another dozen in sp moss ( I slowed them down by putting in the garage and in a cool closet),  and I don't know how many in the fridge - a wild guess would be 35, maybe 40, or is it 50?  Crap, I don't know.

But.............. I am giving a few rooted cuttings to a guest at my place of employment!!  He thinks he's getting one - operative word here is "thinks", I put 3 different varieties in the bag for him.  I'll just tell him he could 1. give 2 away, or   2. Put them in pots, grow them and THEN give cuttings away!!

number of cuttings i'm willing to work with is limited by the moisture bin set up i have. 30 would be ideal for me. so far i lost too many cuttings this winter, still have most varieries and about 27 cuttings in cup. they all need to be moved to 1 gal soon. but this week for whatever reason we are getting low down to 20's.

I have met a few people who were so obsessed with collecting figs and spending money on fig trees and cuttings, a year or two later they just give up everything. Some people are forced to give it up due to Divorce, moving, some just took more responsibility than they can handle. Like the guy who wanted to grow his collection on his roof in NYC.

What baffles me is when it comes time 3-5 years later if grown in pots how folks root prune em all as ive seen totes upon totes packed with scion rooting , i mean you only can give so many away to family or friends.

I have over 150 rooting or rooted!! a ton of those are from my trees, I offered but didn't get enough requests to dry up the supply. I couldn't just dispose of them. I have a small farm not too far away that has tons of 1 gallon pots for free, I have to pay them a visit to pick up some more. I'll be giving plants to family, friends, members of the forum and some to the farm that is giving me 1g pots for free (they can sell or grow if they wish). many of the cuttings are from members on the forum, THANK YOU!!

My main concern is protecting the young plants from deer. seems I will be fencing off another section of the yard for use as a fig/fruit tree orchard, just have to convince my wife that I can make it look good and still leave her enough yard. when we first bought our house she didn't care for a big yard, now she wants to have a certain amount of open space and grass. I like to grow food not lawns, and I don't have to mow trees every few days.

seems like big plans, hope I don't burn out, lol...

HAHA!  Same reactions from my wife!

I have 45 in moss, 17 in cups, and many more cuttings on the way.

This made me laugh.
they do not smell like cat pee! Get her a cat. She'll understand the difference.

I believe the cat pee smell is a natural defense for fig trees against mice,
and other small gnawing rodents.
Smell like a cat that's been marking it's territory, and is nearby,
It's too bad the figs haven't figured out how to keep that smell when dormant.

Only a couple of dozen rooting in bags this year over here. Focusing on shaping and dialing in the water, lime and fertilizer regime this year. I should have 25+ self watering containers made ready for fig plants that are dormant in 3 gallon containers currently by end of March. There is a local burger king manger whom is nice enough and saving buckets for me so we'll see.

strive,

SWCs are great most plants I had in them loved them. Lychees I am growing absolutely love them as well. Btw you are doing 5 gal SWC or larger? I made some good SWCs out of the 18 gal totes.

Null, I saw dominic and kerry's results and am utterly amazed. I am using 5 gallon buckets inside of 6 gallon buckets. Using a few screws to hold inner bucket up and caulking around the edges. This gets me about a 2 gallon resevior which carries me through most absences in the summer.

Strive,

Yeah the results are great, I don't bother with the plastic mulch to prevent top watering. I found that top watering them works just fine. I was using the HD 5 gal buckets to make a bunch. They last about 2 years for me, because I need to take the plants out to root prune after 2 years. Unfortunately with the root pruning process, I end up having to cut up the container to dislodge the roots without damaging them much.

I have been using a mixture of Superoot containers, SWC, regular plastic, and fabric. So far testing a Vista in a 12gal Superoots (was previously in a 5 gal SWC), a Dark Portuguese in a 10 gal fabric, and various other figs in standard containers. I have about 5 rooted Marseilles vs black, I intend to test (1) in a 5gal SWC, (1) in a 5gal Superoots, (1) in a 5 gal standard, and (1) in a 7 gal fabric. Will try to give all relatively the same care and same soil mix.

Doing this test will then really give me a comparison between the different containers.
