How many ripe fresh figs you can eat at one time?

Some of us went to the Jon's Fiesta today.
It was a nice event with good food and presentations followed by the fig tasting.
Everything was yummy! Thanks, Jon!
But at the end many figs were left on the plates since the taste was overpowering.

How many fresh figs you can eat fresh? I think the average today was about 8 halves followed by a brake and maybe 2-3 more ( some had more). I consider this a lot, heavy sugary aftertaste for sure.

As a note, 2 figs stood out today: the Zidi and Sucrette. They were very-very good! Very rich in taste and texture, good size and color.

I like to eat as many as I can and still try and leave a little room for some dinner...haha

I had a simple strategy;
If the fig is perfectly ripe or very soft.  Then rather than risk the fig getting bruised in the picking basket it goes in my mouth.  So how many I eat depends on how many are perfectly ripe (or over ripe) at the time.  Unfortunately this year because of last winter it is a year of recovery for my figs so it will be less figs for me.

All kidding aside is there a health issue with too many figs = too much sugar for some?

Enjoy them while you can. In the last 5 yrs or so my ability to digest fruit sugars has fallen off the map. More than one small fig is really too much now.

I'd think 20 a day is too much for anyone from a health perspective unless you're working out a couple hrs a day. But eating figs all day is better healthwise than drinking cokes all day like some do.

When I was growing in Houston, I could eat all the ripe figs from two mature (12+ years) Celeste trees plus the hear and there figs on my smaller trees each day. If I was taking figs to someone, I would eat some then fill a 2.5 cup Rubbermaid container with the rest. I normally took care of my trees in the morning. So I would eat them over the time I was out. Last year was my first substantial crop near Austin, and I missed most of it. Nothing was ripe a few weeks ago, but there was better than 300 figs on the trees. I was hoping to get back in September, but it won't happen. I am going to miss them all. I will have to wait for 2015 to test my limits.

Steve, I'm down to 2-3 cans per day.

Hi Greenfig,
Because I want to be an example for my daughter I have to share my figs with her and her mum.
So for now I haven't reached my limit.
It wouldn't be a problem for me to eat only figs at on meal - starter: figs, main dish : figs, dessert: figs.
But for now I just haven't harvested enough figs at once for three ...
But 15 or 20 for a meal seems a good number - so I need 60 figs ...
For now, I think that 10 figs at once must be my record .

So far 15 at one sitting. When the trees get bigger, who knows. Having too many figs to eat at once is a problem I can only wish for.

We had Zidi, 326-1, Native de Agentile, 291, Yellow Neeches, 309-B-1, Verdal Longue, 333-1, Col de Dame, 160-50, Adriatic, 135-4s, White Ischia, and some others from WEO, plus Black Mission NL, Vista. Other people brought Panache, Reverse, Kadota, Long Yellow, Col de Dame, Strawberry Verte, Samoa Sunshine, and more.

So, greenfig, which ones did you miss out on?

Hmm.. I guess I estimated the number without calculating them nicely and totally screwed this up.
Sorry , guys.

I am pretty sure I have eaten over 50 celeste in a setting, I have visions of Cool Hand Luke taking in the eggs.

I find my tongue starts to go numb after a bowl full.

I can easily eat 25....probably more

I am rather small and how many you can eat is a trick question. If you visit FMD and eat every one he hands you and tells you to taste. You will loose count. Truly a gracious person indeed. And someone at his house can cook. Memories forever! Better yet ask him how many I ate.

I am joining the Villagers, let me get my torch and run him out of here....LOL    Last year at the Fiesta I ate to much food and couldn't eat that many figs...oh well. I think that is the plan...LOL   stuff them with food first...LOL

Armando,
You got it, man! That was it ! :)

This year my desert king had a bumper crop. They had a pretty good size, 70 grams or more were fairly common. Even my 6 year old could eat more than 10 in a row. Too bad the breba season was over now.

so...nobody took pictures?  c'mon...

For comparison purposes, a 50 gram fig has about 8 grams of sugar and is about 40 calories.  A 16 ounce Coke has 54 grams of sugar.  So if you eat 6 medium figs that would be roughly equivalent, in terms of sugar and calories, of drinking one soda.  The FDA recommends about 250 to 300 grams of carbohydrate per day for an average person.  If you didn't eat any other carbs (bread, pasta, etc), then your allotment for one day would be 35 or so figs, depending on size.

But I'm sure eating 6 figs is way better for you than drinking a Coke.  I can down 10 figs pretty easily, but there is certainly an insulin response required at that level.  Kids can down sweet items so fast, my daughter could eat 10 no problem.

Last week Jon, Harvey and I were at UC Davis. After 52 figs, on day 1, I felt sick! My stomach was so full. It was hard to not eat any figs on day 2, but I limit my eating to 25 figs. Heck just one Zidi fig equals 3 or 4 other common figs! I know I ate 4 Zidi figs. They are so sweet and so rich. I brought back 8lbs of figs on the plane. I'm glad you guys had fun. I videoed our UC Davis trip. It will be on Youtube today.

To date, I've only eaten one fig at a time.  Though that has frequently been followed by another fig a very short time later. :)

Realistically, I try to limit consumption of anything as I have been striving to continue losing weight.  I try to eat when I'm hungry, not simply for pleasure.  But sometimes the necessity of "research" takes over.

Some research has revealed unhealthy effects of sugar consumption.  One doctor has suggested limiting sugar intake to 25 grams, though he has suggested eating in fruits with high fiber is less harmful since the fiber slows down absorption.  http://www.cbsnews.com/news/is-sugar-toxic-01-04-2012/

At this point I could not say which one is which. I can tell you from the standpoint of taking insulin all figs (as most fruit) are not equal. Back when I compared, Celeste was one of my sweetest figs by taste, but had comparatively little impact on my blood sugar levels.

I have never had the chance to find out how many I can eat at one time, but I would guess its 15-20 if I pushed it. My diet counter says that a medium fig (2 in diameter) is 75 calories. For my age and weight 2400-2500 calories are considered healthy. So... 30 good-sized figs would be a day's calorie intake.

Instead, I would rather have a day where I ate nothing but figs and goat cheese, breakfast, noon, and dinner. Since soft goat cheese is 75 calories to the oz, that means I could do 24 figs and 6oz of goat cheese for one day's calorie count. Now that would be a day to remember!

The only problem is the half bottle of wine needed to go with this plan would blow my diet badly!

The sweetness and the sap could change all that, Gene, no?
After about 10 figs my lips start itching if I bite and my mouth wants a piece of meat badly.
Probably this is not typical on this forum :)
