how much are you willing to pay for fig tree?

i'm sure sky is the limit for some. I find around $20-30 reasonable. i see figs on ebay going up to 150 or higher. i'm firm believer when it comes to one spends the money one earns any way one wants. what's your limit?

pete

i agree.....i guess it will depends on size as well. i think its fair to charge more for a larger tree, 2-3 year old 5'-6' tall should sell for more

I suppose everyone has their price.

I won't pay more than $35 for a tree less than 3gal in size.  For $10, I can usually have a handful of cuttings and grow a half dozen.

It's a gut thing! If I pause, I don't do it. But I have paid 45 on eBay for named varieties.

I'm more embarrassed at the amount on cuttings I spent that I screwed up BADLY!

Yeah, I got into a cutting back-and forth with another forum member (unknowingly) on eBay back in 2009.  We chuckled about it afterwards, split the cuttings and split the end price of the auction.  I think we both ended up with several healthy trees (I know I did) from the cuttings, and what I shared in the price of the cuttings was less than I would have paid for one-quarter of a single rooted tree, so ....

I agree with everything that everyone else has said thus far.  It just depends on the variety, the age, and how badly I want that particular tree.

I said i would never pay this amount but i kept looking at a particular picture from nursery no longer around.
I bought in March of 2009 and 1 day soon hope to recoup some back on ebay.

No regrets as it is the most beautiful fig tree in my yard.

Figs trees "were" real cheap in my area when I was building my collection. It was not unusual to find real nice 5 to 6 ft. LSU Gold, LSU Purple, Celeste, and Brown Turkey trees going for $10.00. JR was selling his trees for $4.00 before he started taking mail orders.  The most i paid for any fig tree was $80 for a mail order 3 gallon specimen. That tree later died from a root disease. I would not do that again unless I could personally inspect the tree.

My cheapest 3 gallon trees were FREE. I obtained several LSU Gold and LSU Purple trees from a local retail nursery that were on fall clearance. The lady who runs the nursery was kind enough to also GIVE me 2 Biscamp Pear trees and a Southern Bartlett Pear. When I put my mind to it......this single Cajun boy knows how to sweet talk the ladies ;>). Maybe I shaved extra close that day! Or perhaps she was just in the holiday spirit.....who knows. Anyhow, I visited with her last week to again thank her for the pear trees. Those do real well in my area.

I know I have spent far too much on a couple lol, but to say what is my limit depends on many factors as Alan has indicated. It is easy to get caught up in the bidding wars on ebay, but much more preferable to purchase at a set price.

1 gallon trees at Belleclare were $50-60, for comparison.

Wow, Martin.  That receipt total (for that one plant) made me a bit queasy.

Good for you, though.  Sometimes you just have to do what feels right.

Don't get me wrong, if Belleclare was still around, I'd seriously consider changing my stance for a shot at a Pratt's Purple..... ;)

@Jon, if you end up with any for sale this year, please set one aside for me.

Here's a womens point of view.

I sell 10 first year cuttings for $10 each, then spend that $100 on a couple rare varieties and the net result is I'm even.  So I did not spend a thing.  Right !!!!

The real question is, "who has one?"

It is supposed to taste really, really good, and it is small and dark, all of which describes my favorite traits in a fig. Pratt's Purple and Popp's Purple were at the top of my list for a while. I have a Popp's Purple 1gal at this point (1st year). Now looking for Pratt's.... Everyone has their wish list.....

The rarity of it makes it that much more intriguing to me.

Jason, Your time for a Pratt will come. Had 2/3 Pratt's ripen this week. Pix will come later.

To further add and don't get me wrong im not well off by any means.
But life is short and i will enjoy what i like to do to my best ability.
Get a hold of a Belleclare   #93  then we talk about what i would pay.
But it would not be from just anyone .

HA! It's the old story of Supply and Demand versus my Soc.Sec. check !!

I once offered Adriano $500.00 for an 8 year old Genovese Nero plant but the offer was declined I would of paid that too. But thats just me.

Fred...I 'm with Ya on that one!

It would depend on the source for me I would pay much more for the same fig from someone who is passionate about their plants.
nurseries that get their plants from a wholesaler generally don't know what they are getting and sometimes they don't care
I have a lot of plants that are ? now from dealing with unreliable sources in the past.
Like Martin said not from just anyone.

@ Nelson  --  I understand the willingness to pay a good price for Genovese Nero.  Enthusiam can race way ahead of common sense like what happen to my Genovese Nero, Brog. Bianco & Corynth --- all suffered the fate of DEATH in less than 3 months & these are not small plants -- at least close to 2 ft tall plants. Good thing I acquire them on an exchange of plant for plant.

When I first got into figs, I was willing to pay good prices for any fig trees. It was almost impossible to get any decent variants here. For now, I have sufficient variants that would give me a good supply of figs or trade for interesting variants. Hence the idea of paying high prices is not likely to happen and I am glad I waited for Native Black & Lebanese Red,  where I was given(thanks) cuttings this season.

$500 for a tree.. wow.. then again that's 8 yrs of dedication plus the tree. since getting married, i can't remember paying for anything i want for more than $100... other than that single malt scotch i got for going way party for one of my friends.

As you all mention, it really depends on situation. It is great to get cheap cuttings and grow your own tree for much less then the rooted established plant would cost.

On the other hand, my husband and I lived for few years in a old house which was hard to heat up. I discovered it is hard to convinced fig cutting to grow when I wear jacket around the house. Maybe I should have put the cuttings in the fridge for a longer and wait for warmer weather.

So long story short. Whatever I spend on cuttings was wasted money. When I bought a tree it was not waste money. (I still didn't spend more than 30 dollars for a plant)

Since we moved last year to our new house, I might get a bit braver and spend some money on cuttings. Thank goodness it is nice, warm and cozy in here.

What is so special about Genevese Nero?? I assume that it is a different fig than Brogiotto Nero........
