how often to water when in 1 gallon pots?

Hi!  I don't know if this has already been covered elsewhere but how often do you usually water your figlets when they are in 1-2 gallon pots?

Thanks!!!

There is no set time. There are too many things that affect it. Potting mix, temps, sun exposure, wind.... When they feel dry I water them. Sometimes it's once a week sometimes it's every day.

I like Al's advice: "Wait until they are completely dry, then water them the day before."

As John mentioned, many factors determine how frequently the trees should be watered.  When the containers start to feel (you have to learn how to gauge) light, then water.  You do not want the growing mix to be too dry as it becomes hydrophobic.  If this happens, give it some water, wait five minutes, then water as usual.

Also, the leaves can be used as a gauge.  When the leaves wilt during the heat of the day but don't spring back when the sun starts to set... water the plant.

I go by weight of the pot weather its a cup or as large as my 30 gallon containers. With the smaller ones i pick them up with the large ones i tilt them and can tell.

Its a feel that ones gets use to over time even useing different types of potting soil such as seed starter that i have in several pots a heavier type of mix.

Thanks everyone for the tips!  I had been going by the weight of the pot but I just wanted to make sure I don't kill any of them by overwatering:)!

you can get potting soil that holds moister better.  it has a gel additive.

The downside to water enhancer is that ... if you use a potting mix with them, and you overwater, I think your overwatering will be sticking around a LOT longer.  ;)

I also use the weight of the pot but for many years I have also used a little water meter. It is a little meter on a probe, costs less than $10 at a hardware store or plant supply place. For me it is quicker and easier with large pots and I think it is great for someone trying to get a feel for the weight of the pot. It takes all of the guess work out for you.
