I use some oyster shells. last winter I've left some(3 buckets) outside. easy desalting.

cover the soil with broken shells. weeds control, sunshine reflection, and adding lime slow, mild, but effectively.

When planting in ground, I just throw two or three oyster shells in the hole. I have used oyster shell grit (for chickens) in the hole.
I tried oyster shell on top, sort of like mulch, but weeds, etc. grew in them. More work than it was worth.
As for in pots, wouldn't it depend on your soil medium used ?

i grow in containers. and i add lime to them.

i'm more interested in if there will be any benefit of adding lime to new cuttings. i usually put few handful of lime on my 10 gal tub few times a year, and less for my 3 gal pots.

I always add dolomitic lime to my rooting media, about 1 Tbsp per gallon. Don't know if it helps, but I root in pine bark & peat which are acid.

Try labeling some with and without lime and let us know how it works. Espoma makes a good organic lime product.

i might put some lime on Black Madeira cutting and see what happens.

I don't think it will hurt if you follow the dosing guidelines, but I would experiment with a cutting that is easier to replace.
