how to control root growth?

i'm sure vigorous root growth is a good thing. but, i have repotted my trees back in june into 10 g pots. now the 10 g pots are full of root already. i think they can stand till root pruning coming spring, but is there any way to control the root growth without damaging the tree?

when i moved the trees into 10g pot, they were from 3-4 g pots. so, that means the root mass has grown double its size within last 2 months. if this keeps on, i'll have to either repot or up-pot again next summer after the root pruning in spring.

as much as i like my trees, it's not that fun keep up potting or repotting.

any suggestion on what to do in order to control root growth?

pete

Hi Pete in short not that i know of. Welcome to container growing it gets much worse the more plants you have .  ; )

Its been my experience that fig trees that badly need root work will need constant watering as pot is mostly roots and not enough soil to hold any water in warm weather.

Grow roots inground through drain holes and the containers still need root work as there growing in the pot also . There is no way around it that i know of unless the whole tree is in the ground.
