How to dormancy

Hello,

I know figs just came out of dormancy for most folks, I'm just researching to plan ahead.

My winter in Ohio gets down to 0-5 degrees F.  How should I put my potted figs through dormancy?  Do I take them inside to my 70 degree home, put them in my 60 degree basement, or leave them in the 5 degree cold?

Is a garage an option ?

Maybe make a cold storage in your basement or you could bury them in the ground after the leaves drop in the fall.

1st choice - overwinter in an unheated, attached garage.

2nd choice - bury container in the ground against the north wall of a heated building & wrap the top in burlap to protect against dessication.

Don't forget to include root-pruning and repotting (before budswell) in your plan on a regular basis.

Move to Texas!!!

Too bad climate controlled storage places do not let you choose the temps...

I think Herman2 used to dig a big pit 5 ft deep and place his pots in it, then cover with plywood and a tarp. No burying. Please correct me if I am wrong anybody...

Been to Texas. Nice term of stay, but came back to Ohio. I wrapped mine with burlap loosely around each branch. then a velour blanket of the kind you can buy at discount houses for $3-5, drawing the branches together gently. Finished with a tarp secured with masking tape. They are small (1-3 gallon pots) and I wanted to be sure. Put them in an unheated garage. They now have leaves and I am doing that driveway shuffle. I live in Richland county where we get weather straight of Chicago.
