He grows his figs as it works for him, but I think it is silly for him to describe how the Japanese do their step overs, as it has been described in many scholarly papers... as I understood, and am trying with a few of mine, they are not trimmed short, but rather grow to be a 6 feet whip, and slowly leaning it down (during a 10 days period) to form the main trunk. By taking the apical growth from the tree, it develops lots of side branches, that want to replace the main one, when this is done 2-3 years, the stronger, well spaced are cut into spurs, which we see the pictures.
