Anyone come up with a good way to keep dogs away from fig trees? I've got a 6 month old Boxer pup and I can tell already I'll be chasing him around the yard whole he's dragging my trees around...pots and all.

When I trim my trees and throw the limbs on the ground, my dogs grab them and chew them up. I can't see how they can stand the bitter taste of the latex, but they love it. To a dog it must be a treat. Go figure!

To stop your dog from grabbing your trees, try spraying some hot sauce on the limbs. Once he gets a taste of that he'll think twice before he uses it as a chew toy.

I sprinkled cayenne pepper around one tree that I've brought indoors to get a head start. Ten minutes later I noticed him walking around locking his chops.....with his snout COVERED in cayenne....he's a handsome Devil but not too smart.

Our dogs always considered various kinds of pepper, hot sauce, bitter apple, etc. as yummy condiments. What you could do is use something you already know your dog doesn't like. If he hates baths put some dog shampoo on the plant pot. Flea spray can also work while killing fig pests at the same time. For a braver dog try hiding with the garden hose and make it 'rain' whenever he gets near the figs. With dogs it helps to think outside the box.

Going to buy some bitter apple as well as clove oil, heard that may work.

My 2 german shepherd mutts run and play all day & have never bothered my figs.  Except occasionally know a pot over.
I think the secret is keep the dogs busy with dog toys & play with them. 
If dogs get bored they will look for entertainment and will playfully destroy anything in sight.

My Dalmatian ate a skillet of freshly cooked jalapeños and onions while the skillet was searing hot so I'm keeping an eye open. Perhaps a coating of hot English mustard, very hot chilli oil or that stuff people use to help them stop biting their nails might work?

Electrified Fence....lol...he'll be fried in no time. He eats his own poo if I don't clean it up quickly enough...like I said he's a Boxer, not known to be smart. He ate one of my 3 Brebas off my Petite Negra yesterday....I'm going to try one of those remote collars that emit a high pitched sound when you press a button. I really didn't think this through when I replaced my black Lab that passed away in December. She was a great dog...wouldn't touch anything that wasn't hers...this guy is so damn curious. I've already pulled two batteries out of his mouth.

Spray figs with Carolina Reaper tea..... they'll chew on the trees....once. Won't hurt them. Works on all plants for all pests..... I ran out. I'm using Trinidad Scorpion Butch T this year.

I make it myself. Get a generic spray bottle. Now Carolina Reapers at the worlds hottest pepper. Availability may depend on your location. I grow the Scorpions myself. Kijiji or a google search will find them for you but really you just need to find the hottest peppers you can get your hands on. Fresh is best. Chop up a large bunch and pour boiling water over them. Close lid and let steep overnight. Next day strain and pour into spray bottle and use. Some people add a small amount of dish soap to help bind it to the plant.

Warning: be upwind as you spray or your eyes will not be happy. You've basically made a light pepper spray

If you try any kind of homemade pepper spray be sure to use the seeds in your brew as well. Those buggers have lots of heat.

These large breed dogs are still mentally puppies for 2 years, but so big at just a few months, that they can wreak havoc in just a minute or two!

I have a very smart 5 month old Irish Setter and he loves fig trees. (Told you he was smart!)
I put him out to "potty" and not 2 minutes later, he had eaten the tops off of the 2 figs I was going to plant later today. Not nibbled, not just broke off, all of the tree above the soil in the pot was completely gone. Not a trace remained.

For the record, my dog Dash chases, fetches, swims, etc. all of his waking hours- me & the kids keep him playing & busy, and though that keeps him out of most trouble, he's still teething like crazy & he can destroy something in seconds.

I don't have an answer, but I wanted to share, because it's not your fault & not your boxer's fault. He'll likely grow out of it if you can keep him busy. Certainly try the hot peppers too!

Also, does anyone have a Smith or a Emalyn's Purple for sale or trade, as mine are not going to make it! I'd be thrilled with a cutting, plant, or air layer. I'm in Northern CA, near Chico, but travel down to Sacramento monthly, so anywhere near here, I could pick up. Or I could pay shipping. I promise to keep it away from Dash!

His name is Shane. He sells seeds, plants and dehydrated peppers. He says he only ships in Canada. But you can ask... He literally has all of the top 10 or 15 world record holding peppers for heat.

I originally asked him about seeds for the Carolina Reaper (hottest) but on explaining what I was using them for he recommended the "Trinidad Scorpion Butch T" as it easier to grow and produces many more peppers.
