how to overwinter seedling?

Hi All,

I live in Vancouver and was sent a fig cutting from a friend in California this past January/Feb. I followed directions on this site on how to grow the scion and now have the fig plant in a 1 gallon pot indoors. It's only about 1.5 feet high.

I left the plant indoors over the summer in front of south facing window. I'm not sure if this was a mistake? My understanding is that I was not to plant it outdoors until the root system was large enough to transfer into a 5 gallon pot. In any case, it's doing fairly well except that the leaves are blotchy/ discoloured and eventually fall off. There is lots of new growth however. Any ideas on what the blotchy/ discoloured leaves may be?

Also, how do I overwinter this seedling since it's already indoors?

Any feedback would be helpful.

Hi Ammuni,

Yes is should have went outdoors in its pot to grow or transplanted to a slightly larger pot outdoors and assimilate to outdoors then in storage this winter to go dormant instead of leaving it in house.

You may have misunderstood that phrase, planting outdoors probably meant inground in which case it would have been not a good idea for its first season in Canada.
Since its been indoors all its life im not sure if you could set it in cold storage without shocking it to death as i have never had a situation like this and dont want to give you wrong information, Hopefully others can chime in that know.
If not i wll try to bring this thread back up to the top in near future.

Keep it inside since you have it growing, I never heard to keep in so long inside, but we all have made mistakes, noone perfect, but I didn't hear of the 5 gallon rule either. If it was me, I would leave it in the window maybe when the days start to get shorter, the less amount of light will force it into a dormancy state, dormancy doesn't just occur because of temps, but also because of the changes in the amount of daylight, getting shorter now.  I would transfer it into a pot and put out in the spring.  Dont let it grow inside another year, it needs the outdoors and the sun.  The blotchyness may be FMV.  I don't know, could be spider mites since it is in a drier atmosphere than usual for so long, do you see any little webs under the leaves?  I wish you luck.  Ciao

Hi Dieseler and Italiangirl74,

Yes, it seems I definitely made a mistake keeping it indoors. I wish I'd found this message board sooner. We had such a warm sunny summer in Vancouver this year so bringing it outdoors for the summer would have made sense.  Well, I guess I'll just keep it where it is and see if it goes into dormancy on its own in November.

I haven't seen any little webs under the leaves. However, I brought a leaf sample to the a nursery and they thought it was lack of appropriate fertilization.

I followed the growing tips "Festival of Fruit 2007" sheet on this site to grow the scion and transfer it into a 2 gallon pot.  It indicates I should wait until it outgrows a 5 gallon pot to transfer it into the ground. It also indicates that I need to water with "half-strength solution of Miracle-Grow" once a week. I'm assuming I should stop fertilizing now if I want it to go into dormancy?

Well...I guess this will be an experiment.

Thanks for your responses.

Ciao, If you have been fertilizing regularly, you can stop with the Dormancy period approaching.  Good luck.
