Thanks for the education. Awesome resource.I'm a 1st year fig grower in SW michigan.I bought one Hardy Chicago and got 6 more successful plants from cuttings. They are all in self watering 5 gallon buckets and put on some good growth/height/leaves their first season.I plan to let them get some cold weather and a few light frosts to send them into dormancy. Then I plan to bring them into my cold dark basement and limit/monitor the water. All my outbuildings will experience below zero temperatures at some point this winter. I am concerned this would kill the poor things. The basement will be in the 50's and down into the 40's F.Any suggestions/improvements for how to get my new lovely figs through their first winter? Thanks in advance and finest regards, troy
40's are perfect. Keep the light low and they should snooze fine. 50s, I don't know could be a little warm maybe other people who use basements will chime in. I don't know what you do with water in the reservoir of a SWP over the winter ether.
I have quit watering the reservoir in the bottom of the bucket. Now that it has cooled off, they don't suck up the water like they did when it was hot.So, effectively, it will be empty.troy
