how to prune the top to make the tree look good?

i'm really bad at making my trees look good. they all look like crap. i see all these wonderful pictures of members tree and wondering how they do that.

any suggestion or guide line on how to prune the tree to make it look good? my trees look like mexican hairless dogs.

my VdB tasted very good last year. i'm hoping it will be better this year.. unless i get to taste Kathleen's Black. in which case, i'll still enjoy VdB more since it didn't give me any trouble getting the figs.

this year, i left 4 branches and cut all the rest off. there were two suckers. i left them thinking i'll get two more trees out of it.

now.. this thing looks like tv antenna with bit of hair on the top.

i guess i'll have to let it grow out this year and do something about it next spring..

still VdB looks better compare to Paradiso Gene and KB... both has 3 trunks with hair on top.

i'm only going to cut branches that's crossing or growing into the center next year.

Pete, do you pinch the ends after you see 5 leaves or so per branch?  That makes for a lot more branches and a lot more figs.

Pete - ROFLMAO (lol lol)  Mexican hairless dogs!!!!!  What a hoot!

i don't pinch my trees. tho, i did for KB this year..

last year was second year for my trees, and i wanted them to grow as much as possible before forming the shape, but i guess, i did it wrong.

i just started cutting them up this spring and didn't know when to stop.

VdB is very nice small tree shape with strong main trunk. it's putting out more branches, so i'll be very reserved next spring on it.

Paradiso Gene and KB are just tall with nothing to look at. i'm sure there is way to make it look full. maybe i'll put notches on them like some of the post said.

some of the trees other members have just look so much.. full.
