How to solve FMV problem?

I found my RdB has FMV problem.

Any idea to solve it?

Yes sell it on ebay.

Really?!
What other figs you have that have not showed it?

Simply put;
if you have any issue with FMV, just destroy the tree
else
(maybe), it may shake it off when it is over its some-current-stress.

Cure: (practically) hopeless.

I have to stop buying fig trees. I do not know its risks.

Thanks.

Umm.... the cure is a killer... Bonfire!

figs4me,

Looks like you are concerned and I don't blame you. But rest assured ( to my knowledge ) the FMV is harmless to us humans.
Figs are kind of funny, they can have it today and it goes away as the tree matures. Or. you can have a mature tree that never had it and all of a sudden it has it.

I hope you would consider looking more into the figs and fmv. You will quickly learn it really not that big of a deal.

You have a Ronde De Bordeaux fig and you will not have a problem getting rid of it. But I hope you will hold on to it as it is one of the cream of the crops of figs.

Good luck

That's about it. When I first got into figs - just over half a year ago, I too was at first very saddened to hear how widespread fmv is. I even thought of chucking the entire pursuit. But I'm very glad I didn't.

The more I read, the more I learned it's not that big a deal. There are some figs that have it more, and some climates where it negatively affects figs more, but in general, plants survive quite well with it. You just have to do some experimenting to find varieties that do well for you. You'll be doing that to find ones that taste best to you anyway. :)

Figs have been around almost forever. So has FMV. :)

Gina and Rafed are true on the severeness of FMV.

Most figs will recover and grow through the symptoms. Some areas do not have the disease, those are mostly colder areas. To date I have not seen any local trees with the disease, but I do have FMV carriers on order.

Think of it like chicken pox, once you have them they are in your body for life. If you get stressed out as an adult, here comes Shingles, caused by the same virus. It wont kill you and it usually goes away when the stressor ceases

Hi all,

I'm thinking of ordering some cuttings from UC Davis and since I'm not in the States, they will issue a phytosanitary certificate.

Does anyone know if this minimises the likelihood of FMV in the cuttings sent to me since only disease-free plant material can be sent out?

figs4me - You do not say what stage your RdB is; cutting, young tree, established tree, etc. There is a possible solution: aspirin. I agree with Gorgi and the others that FMV and the other viruses that cause fig mottling disease (FMD) are not currently curable in an established tree. However, by activating your tree's innate immune system you may be able to lower the viral impact and allow it to out grow its problem. Some of this was discussed in this thread:
http://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post/Instant-FMV-6004031

I had one of 3 Sicilian Black Italian cuttings start showing pretty significant FMD back in early August. Its growth seemed to stop while all my other cuttings were putting out new growth & looking happy. I do a foliar spray with worm casting tea and aspirin on my tomatoes every week or so. So, I have sprayed my FMD impacted cutting every week for the last 5 weeks. The established leaves greened-up, the mottling decreased in the established leaves, and it has resumed putting out new growth. As we say in science, this is an N=1 observation. I can not say whether the reversal of the FMD is due to the aspirin, the worm casting tea or the combination. It could be something else entirely. However, the results are consistent with the legion of reports in the literature on the impact of treating virally infected plants with salicylic acid.

There is a LOT still to be learned about FMD.

My VdB had such sever FMV it would not grow normal leaves, fruits would ripen only to be sour, it looked like complete garbage.  I planted it in the ground in the spring, now I have multiple very healthy branches.  I will try this next year again if I have other varieties are doing the same so I can just air layer them and get a healthy plant, I'm sure it still carries the virus but it seems to at least put it at bay.
