hi just order a MADELEINE" Rooted Cutting 1 year old from France .. I'm new to growing figs

How cold does your garage get?

garage gets around 38 at its coldest

I would probably keep it in its pot and in the garage. I would water infrequently and never heavily until spring.

When are they sending it to you?  Many times they don't ship until spring.

If you receive it now in zone 6.
You could store it in a cool place until spring or grow now near a sunny window sill or under grow lights.
Make sure you don't let it freeze since it is a young plant.

If you ordered this Fig cutting from France off EBay, I hate to put a damper on the Fig you ordered, but you may get a visit from the USDA! Most cuttings and Plants are not well recieved from other Countries, from our Goverment. If you got the Fig Cutting off Ebay, you may have a problem. The USDA came to see me and asked for the Cuttings,I had just recieved from Portugal off eBay ...I was taught a lesson on buying plant material from other Countries beside the US.... on eBay...Hopefully, you will get lucky. :)

Depending on the size, I would pot it into what you want it to grow in at the start of next growing season. I'm guessing it will be bare-rooted or in a rather small pot, which will likely be a pain to regulate water level. If you do have to do this, after potting water it in like you would any other time of year and put it in your garage like everyone else said. If it's around, I like to use about an inch or two of snow every 2wks-1month, just depends on how dry the air has been. The snow melts slow so most of it absorbs into the potting mix -vs- watering, sometimes with water a good deal of it will run through and out the bottom of the pot.

Good luck and welcome to the forum, you better start looking for room for trees because this is very addictive.

thank you all , I hope it grows ,would love to share some cuttings (that's next on my to do list grow from cuttings)

to add to Frank... If bought off ebay from France, cancel it. You will get a call or visit, you will have the plant confiscated by the usda, and you risk the usda a taking your other fig trees.

Just my opinion.

Yep, I got to meet our local officer via phone and email over fig seeds I bought, I handed over the two little trees I had managed to grow.... was heartbreaking knowing they were going to destroy them... it took 6 months for them to contact me.
Good luck.

Jon the owner of Encanto Farms and the F4F forum will have many cuttings available soon...

Joe, I believe  eBay will give your money back, if you will explain to them the circumstances! They did for me, even after I received the Plant. I told them the USDA man came and got my Cuttings and I wanted to see about getting my Money back and they did. I called them on the phone...Try it !  ......Sorry about your Cutting...:)

Im sure the seller refunded eBay the money too Frank.

thanks frank already told seller keep it ,you live you learn I guess
