How young is too young to air layer?

One of my small HC figs has a "sucker" on it that is as thick as the main trunk. Think pencil thick. The sucker wood is green. Can I air layer it?  Is the tree too young?

I personally wouldn't try to air layer green would I don't think it would do good wait until it's old wood you will probably kill the sucker.

I've only had one air layer fail--and it was on a pencil-thin, green branch from which I tried removing a ring of bark. I must have scored the underlying, soft wood, and the branch cracked. I can't see what you'd have to lose by letting it get a bit thicker.

Since it's a sucker, you might want to wait a month or so and then carefully remove enough soil to see whether it's already rooting on its own. If so, you may not need to air layer it at all--just carefully snip it loose, making sure you've got some good roots attached.

I would wait until the sucker has bark. You could always not cut the bark ring, just use moist medium and a clear plastic bag, or plastic. A sucker growing now will be large enough to layer out  later and have enough time to root before cool weather, unless you live in Alaska. Are you concerned about the sucker taking the main plants energy?
