Hummingbird Moth

A little off topic, but I had to share. This is the first hummingbird moth that I have ever seen. 082.jpg
Beautiful to watch! Fun to photograph! And yes, they are the size of a small hummingbird. Crazy looking!

I find these in the backyard all the time. Also we have a Hummingbird nest in the lilac Bush next to the tomato plants. Many of my fig trees are lined up on a retaining wall that runs parallel to a side fence. Several times while feeding my trees, I've noticed a moth or Hummingbird hovering next to me after feeding on the clematis growing on the fence. I've also been dive bombed a few times when picking tomatoes too close to the nest.

Beautiful flower and moth. That would be great to see James. Does anyone grow porter weed?

Hershell, I edited my post because I left out the part about the clematis vine on the fence behind me. It's verycool to see. I try so be as still as possible while reaching for my phone, but they still fly away.

Commonly known as hawk moths. One type pollinates an evening primrose. Another type lays a big fat egg in squash plants that turns into a big fat grub that eats the plant from the inside out

Uh oh. Hopefully the squash is done before the eggs hatch

Nope. Just as squash matures to blooming size, effects of larva start to wilt plant until it withers away.

Those guys are so cool. I usually see the species with bumblebee colors.

Amazing how they hover and dart.

Hummingbird moths pupate from tomato hornworm larvae.

James. I grow Porter Weed to attract the humming birds. I have red and blue. I am looking for purple, I lost mine several years ago and can't find another. It is amazing how east it is to grow and how much the humming birds like it. It roots easy and is a half hardy perennial here. I need to get a picture posted.

Hershell, I have a blue, which will grow purple in different areas of my property, red, and coral that I purchased from Morris Nursery. They may advertise red porter weed but is a true coral.

Flowers really aren't my things. I know a few of the flowering plants/vines/bushes from Barbra's exclamations either when something blooms or (more often) when she's yelling at me for suggesting we pull something out and replace it with a fruit tree.

To my defense, I can espalier several apple trees where the lilac bush is.

Nice photo.

Here are pictures of Hershells porter weed types, he asked me to post these for him.

Thanks Wills. Does anyone grow these. They are the best plant that I have ever had to attract hummingbirds.
