Hunt a slow grower? (in a SWC)

For you members out there that are growing Hunt, is it a slow grower?  On April 1 I transplanted a Hunt from a 3 gallon nursery pot to a 6.5 gal SWC.  It lost 3 or 4 leaves immediately then stabilized.  Since then it hasn't grown 1/32 of an inch.  Is Hunt a slow grower or was it the move to the SWC that slowed its growth?

Has always been a poor grower for me.

NOT FOR ME!!!!

I've got 4 growing side by side in 16" self watering pots.  Man I can not keep water in the pots!!!!  I'm watering them every freaking day now!   Tomorrow, I'm going to have transplant them to a larger Bill style SWP.  Now, I do have one in my orchard that is not growing at all.  BUt last year when I drove to Texas, I bought 2 Hunts from JR and 2 from Dalton.  I fertilized all my container trees a month a go, now they are taking off.  All 4 of my Hunts are now 6' tall now.  They were 18inches when I bought them.  Both Hunt and Smith are growing out of their pots for me.  And the same for Jurupa and Toni's Brown Italian.  The weather has been hot, humid with daily thundershowers and my figs are loving it!

I think you guys might want to check your pots and see what the problem might me.

Hi Steve, grows great in the ground for me.

Steve,
I don't have a Hunt fig, But whenever anyone mentions stagnant growth, I always think "Root Bound". Were the roots checked and or loosened before placing in the self watering container?.  Also if there was any root damage, that may explain the stagnant growth.

You're probably aware that Self Watering Container need the potting mix to be the same consistency throughout for proper wicking to occur. If the root ball was place in the container without loosening or bare rooting, there may be a problem also.

I finally played brave and lifted the inner bucket out of the outer bucket.  Didn't see any roots sticking out of the drill holes in the bucket.  Also forgot to mention that when I potted up I mixed in 1 cup each 10-10-10 fertilizer, pelletized dolomitic limestone and worm castings, so I would guess the tree isn't underfed.

Pete - I made my own SWC potting mix (one that is recommended by others to wick water well) although your comment of bound roots has me thinking.  The tree was moderately root bound and I did not loosen the roots before planting.  I might just let it go another month or two and if there is no growth, then replant, but this time loosen the root ball and see if that brings improved growth.  Thanks for the suggestion.

Was looking through this post and didn't see where I mentioned that if the tree didn't start growing I was going to do an autopsy on it, live without anesthesia.  I know I've mentioned it to a few members, maybe in another thread.  Well, the tree must have heard me.  Granted not as effective as Martin's threats of "the burn barrel" but it seems to be a good jolt to promote growth.
