Hurricane Irene best wishes sent up and down coast.

Ciao Amici,, I want to send everyone who lives along the east seaboard of U.S. best wishes and safety I wish to you all. There are many of us who live in this area, but many of us live in direct path areas to be hit, NC NJ Pa NY Mass ect. Are you all taking any special precautions? If so I hope you all will stay safe. Any precautions for Figs trees outside in these areas if any need to evacuation. Maybe this is best time to do so now. Our prayers with all of us in these areas and others. Ciao!

Ciao Maggie,

My son just left for Montauk LI, to spend some time at our house there.  In one way, I'm glad someone will be at the house to watch it during the storm, but I'm also concerned for him.  The house is very near the beach, and a storm surge could bring the water close to the house.

I got word that the East Hampton town officials are alerting police, fire and other emergency units to be on guard.  I hope for everyone this storm blows out to sea.

Thank you! My husband doesnt think we will be directly hit.. I'll have to cover my fig from getting too much wind and rain though.. it's so new and just started to have small leavs. But i'l have to have my son (14 mos) sleep with me that night, there is a big big old tree outside his window and I do not want to chance anything.

udaman, A word of advice from one who has had his share of hurricanes, the house can take care of itself. Get everyone out of harms way. You can check on it later, no use risking life or limb. There is hardly anything you can do to help the situation during the height of the storm. We always drive out of the path of the storm and come in close behind it. You can always build another house but can't replace a son.

There is hardly anything you can do to help the situation during the height of the storm. The tidal surge can not only come close to the house it can consume the house. udaman, i agree with Gene. This hurricane is NO JOKE. LI is going to get very very horrible weather, the storm is massive! I would not want the son to go there, people are heading west away and he will be the only one heading east. I would speak with him and hope you can change his mind about going. This is going to be catastrophic because of the size, the coastal impact, the populations densities it is going over. Please be safe and tell son to not bother going. That would be a waste, it could be very dangerous. Ciao and best wishes to you and family.

Thanks for the concern and warnings.  My mom and dad would go to the town shelter whenever there was a big storm, or hurricane, and the people there know how to handle these situations.  It's not his first or last time.   Anyway, how does one evacuate ten million people?

If he isn't there already, he'll be there soon.  He knows the drill, I'm sure if things get really bad, like two years ago, he'll pack up and go to the shelter.  He has tickets for the US Open tennis match on Sunday, and baseball game on Monday, plus the fishing season is just getting good.  I'll keep you posted.

My biggest problem is going to be bringing all my fig trees in to the garage. Yikes!

Dominick,

Tip the pots, lay them flat, and throw a tarp over them.  Less work.

Hello all, I"m here in NJ and i think all the figs will be put away on Friday night, thinking it's going to pour all of Sat. and then Sunday it hits. Will put all the outside stuff by the pool away and the trash cans. If I had hatches I would button them down. Hope all stays safe and is spared any damage. As always good health, Luke

Yeah, I know, But I'm PARANOID! LOL Plus I have 25 in Self watering containers. I am worried about too much rain and wind breaking off the limbs and trunks.

I received a phone call regarding to hurricane shelter twice today by some machine. Anyone else did?

I am going to trash bag over my baby fig trees, will this work? Or should I just lay them flat?

If you don't lay them flat, the wind will do it for you, and tear them up.  If it's only a few trees, take them indoors for a day or two.  If you have a lot of trees, or no place indoors to put them, lay them flat, and cover them.

I have ten trees in 5 gallon pots, I'll put mine in the cellar on Saturday, and leave them there till it blows away.

I took all of my trees, roughly 30 of them ranging from 1/2 gallon pots all the way up to 30 gallon pots and loaded them on my atv trailer.......and yes it was a pain. I am going to leave them outside on the trailer until Saturday because Irene is expected in CT Sunday. On Saturday i am going to put the trailer and trees in the garage, and they will be nice and safe. My only concern is my Grandfathers trees that are in 30 gallon pots. He has large holes in the bottom of the pots and they have a lot of roots. He doesn't want to disturb the roots by moving them in his garage. Any ideas on how to protect them? Thanks Steven

i don't think irene will hit where i am directly. it will be more of concern to the coastal area of the nc. in triangle, i heard the wind will be between 20-30 mph and some rain.

i'll be moving my trees to the front porch where it has shelter and some wind protection. small tree will come inside for a day.

maybe spend the day with my boys playing 'risk'. go over cub scout arrow points.. teach them new joint locks.. fun fun fun..

pete

I guess there is nothing to do for unground trees? I'm just starting to get ripe figs and they will probably all blow away

Its moving up! My favorite weather man is in NYC. Jim Cantore! I am sure he will be blowing all over town he can be very dramatic, but fun! Few of my relatives living in NYC and Atlantic city are coming this way to stay with patches of us scattered around mostly in Philadelphia. Glad they left. Good luck everyone.

I didn't expect things to be too bad but our basement is already flooding, half of my back yard is underwater and many of my pots are floating. A terrible car accident on our block caused the death of one person and another in the hospital and we have hours of rain to go. Power was out for a couple hours but we have it again now.

Just had a 60 foot double oak go down in my yard. It went into the woods-Thankfully. If it went the other way it would have hit my brand new deck.  The winds are still suppose to get worse. A broken Maple is sitting on my power line. Good times!

I'm glad for you the oak fell in that direction.  I worry about the trees, every time I have wind.

I spoke to my son in Montauk, all is well, some power outages, but the road is open and the rain has stopped.  He'll check the neighbor's house on the beach to see how that is.

My brother in Farmingdale is also in good shape.  Although he was up all night watching for tornado's.

Here in Vermont, lots of rain, not much wind.

I wonder how a couple of the taller office towers on 110 by the LIE did, like Sbarro's. It a nice open tunnel up there. Wind whips right through there.
