I bought a tree about 3 years ago and no fruit..??? Is it a dud...???

Yea, I learned my lesson, got this at the swap meet and the guy said it was a Black Mission. Its been in my Mom's backyard getting sun and has been planted into the ground for 2 years. Its 6 Feet tall and very healthy. I haven't seen no fruit, Nada, Zip...etc.    I want to dig it out, but the leaves look like a Col de Dame Blanc and I thought, need to wait and see, maybe its a good one...LOL      What do you guys think...????  Probably started from Seed.

Tengas patiencia, Armando. Give it another year. Joe

LOL,  I have seen fig trees that are six inches tall with a fig, this is 6 feet tall,This is upsetting...LOL  hmmm,  how about pinching or, adding nitrogen, fertilizer...????

I have the same problem with mine. Black Mission starting it's third year and no signs of fruit yet. I'm just gonna hang  on to it.
I can see your concern growing in California though.

How much has it grown this year and how much fertilizer (nitrogen) are you giving it?

Its grown about 2 feet and I am just watering, not adding anything yet.

maybe its a variety that fruit when the tree is mature? maybe its not feeling stressed enough to put figs on (overwatered?)

Give it another season. Make sure you start fertilizing before buds start in spring after tree wakes up from dormancy.
This season, I used a 13-13-13 general granular fertilizer. On the first day of the month starting in April, I sprinkle a small amount of this fertilizer in my pots and around my in ground trees.
It made a world of difference this season. There is so much vibrant growth and figlets that I have not seen on my trees in the past. I have used Miracle Gro in the past but to fertilize so many containers every two weeks was a pain. This way, it's one day a month and I will stop fertilizing in September to prepare for dormancy.
Also forgot to add that in the Spring, I throw a handful of good quality composted cow manure in each of my potted figs.

Thank You Eli and Leon, I was lookin at cutting it down this year. Yes it may do something, will add prayer to.  Thanks Everyone for your response.

Hi Armando93223,
I had that problem with two figtrees. I dropped a load of horse manure and the next year I saw figlets ... But that place being colder, they all dropped .
To tell you more about those trees, I took root shoots from both 2 years ago.
One of them had 3 maincrop that never did ripe last year, and has 4 brebas this year - hopefully, that will help me to identify the strain.
The other strain - I call it the "brunswick perhaps" is growing good in my garden but hasn't shown any figlet for now... Perhaps next year.
I keep on fertilizing them well.
Take a granular fertilizer 10/10/10 and throw 4 of your hands full at the roots and the same each month until September. The tree will sky rocket or die .

Figtrees have high demand for fertilizer and water - it is my belief ! So I always fertilize like crazy. Fertilizing is easy as compared to watering them with 20 liters of water per week- I watered them yesterday ... Man, it is exhausting ! Use of hose is forbidden at those gardens...

Here in Malaysia, we threatened the tree with an axe. ' if you don't produce fruits soon, I'm going to cut you off'. Well..they said it works most of the time but I haven't tried this method yet. Lol.

Norhayati

I have a black mission that I started from a cutting a couple years ago. It is now in the ground, just under five feet tall, central leader with very bushy side growth. Very healthy looking tree, but no signs of any figs yet.

The area where I planted it has had a lot of goat poop dumped on it over the past few years. Maybe the soil has too much nitrogen? I'm OK with that. Let it grow and burn up that nitro for now. It'll make figs when it's ready.

I was gifted a Pete's honey that was 6 years with the guy.. he had enough of nothing of fruits. I told him, I would use for root stalk...well, I did a minor trimming and coiled some of the very long branches. These have put out growth like the Japanese trees, which I am thining out  for better distribuition of branches and some are loaded with brebas. I  think he would not have given it to me, should he had seen it how it looks now. I was the lucky one. It is in a wine barrel. This fall I will be doing a proper pruning. Perhaps you should do the same. chose a few branches and prune it to '2-3 nodes',  and watch what it does.  Give it some food, anything, even banana peels made into juice...

Thanks Everyone for the input. Will spare it for another year. Right now it's on Death Row...LOL    Will began pinching and look to fertilize and give some nitrogen.

Armando right now am facing with the same problem.
I have a young brazilian-roxo tree and was counting on it for the summer bu it lost 30 figs this month...
i dont think it needs caprification cause the mother tree is near, also the mother tree loses alot of fruit but the better percentage of it is ripening.
I can feel your pain , we cherish the tree and give it good soil , good compost but still no fruiting..
i think i will make a rule to leave the tree's in a 3 gallon pot before making a cmmitment and putting it in a bigger pot .

ELI: Lots of Decisions we have to Make.  I am looking to rent a small plot of land. Went to my Stepson's House and he has a big empty extended backyard. So I may have found a place to start FIG PARADISE...LOL    On fruit dropping off a tree, I would think lack of water or stress over Temps may cause this...????  I don't know.

Try shaking the tree down while making threats.    Really, you'll stress it and out come the figs.

I let my in ground Panache grow out after severe pruning last year.   Only a couple of figlets so far after recently pinching compared to the potted one loaded with figs.  Both trees came from the same parent tree.

My neighbours think i am crazy already , holding a 9 mm in front a tree will probably bring me to the nut house faster than it drops its figs :)

Have you pinched this tree before, or will this be the first time?

Armando, maybe you are being too nice to your tree. You have to show it who's boss!

Pictures taken from "Growing Apples in the City" from Kuffel Creek Press.  The author says that happy trees don't fruit as much. They fruit most heavily when under stress. They try to reproduce because they think they are going to die.

"You want your tree to be uneasy; in fact, look out the window and snarl at your tree right now. So if your tree is not fruiting, it may be that you should cut back your watering or fertilizing."

Gene: Yes will be first time pinching, will do this Monday.  Paul: Love your postings...LOL  I've been a Sissy with my trees, now its time to be a Man and let it know who is in Charge...LOL

In Kevin's book, he also mentions girdling the tree but leaving half an inch uncut. He said that is enough for the tree to survive, but stresses it into fruiting. I'm not sure if I would do that except as a last resort.
