I bought three more fig trees

and it's not even time to take them outside yet.
How can this addiction take hold so quickly?  We
had to take a road trip to Atlanta and decided to
check out their plants while we were there (they
are much bigger than the ones available here) so
we figured we'd get a roma tomato and some bell
pepper plants (then I had a co-worker who wanted
three tomatoes- got those too), but I couldn't leave
without checking for fig trees.  There were three
varieties that weren't in my Lowe's when we were
there last weekend.  So now, in addition to my
Hardy Chicago, I have Black Mission, Brown Turkey
and a Celeste.  DBF thinks I'm crazy (I don't care-
he knows me well).  I have to get two more pots
but I think I still have time before they are ready to
go outside.  I have what I think is the perfect spot
picked out for them.  They will be along the garage
wall (faces south) so they will get sun pretty much
all day.  I am going to make the 5-1-1 mix from Al
(tapla) on GW and use it in my pots.  I'm using little
pots this year, and probably the next year or two-
they are roughly 3 gallons, I think.  I don't know about
fertilizer, other than 3:1:2 as the proportions- but
anything that reduces down to 3:1:2 should work,
yes?  12:4:8 diluted to 1/4 strength would reduce
to 3:1:2 as I understand it.  I have more plans but
could someone just critique me to this point please?
I really am new to figs and I want to give them the
best care I can.

Just be sure to label the source of the tree since big box stores like lowes and home depot tend to mislabel. If you ever give cuttings to others it is vital they know you got this at a hardware store until you 100% confirm it is what it was labeled as.

I'm going to make cheapie labels out of pop cans- the name of
the supposed variety, where I got it, the year I got it, anything
else?

I tried that gritty mix.......DID NOT LIKE IT!

Now about all I use is UPM, some small pine bark and about 30/40% perlite

But others have used it and like it.......One word of warning, if you use large containers, you better hope & pray your DBF has a strong back because that mix is heavy.

Pami, I understand you delimma!  I already have 75 fig trees outside in containers and 47 planted in the ground.  Went to Lowe's two weeks ago.  They had 6 fig trees out back near the registers.  The labels stated "Brown Turkey" and cost $9 bucks.   But they did not look like your normal greyish brown trees.  Some of the trees were dark green and some were brown.  Well, I know these places mix up labels a lot!  My gut was telling me these trees were mislabeled and are not BT figs.  So I got 2 of the green ones and went back later the next day for 2 more!

Then I went to Home Depot in my home town and out front were several fig trees.  These were tall!  I mean over 6 foot tall and only cost $19 bucks!  So I got one.  It was labeled Black Mission.  I don't think the tree is a Black Mission.  I wasn't going to buy one except my 3 in ground BM trees did not produce any fruit last year and I am pissed.  I may have to remove 2 of them if I don't see much growth this year.  And if this one turns out to be a BM, then I plan on removing 2 of the 3 trees and planting this new one.

Found a new nursery not far from my home last year.  This weekend was their open house.  I stopped by and noticed a lot of Monrovia fig trees.  Their trees were at least 3 years old and in large container.  They were a bit pricey but they had several Black Jack figs so I had to get one.

Argh!!!!  Fig are addicting!!!!!  How Bout Those Figs!!!!!!
