I didn't take a picture. My Bad! KADOTA

So, I do the trek down the hill, and inspect the Kadota.  OMG!  There is a yellow soft one with brown spots that no bird has pecked, so I snapped it off.  It came easily.

I cut it in half so JD could have a taste.  He never got one.  OMG!  It is now my favorite juicy figgy tasting fig ever!  It is almost seedless!  No crunch.  Just pure rich honey.

I should have taken a photo.  It was about 2 quarters big at it's fattest point.  Very juicy, very rich, and not a hint of crunch.

I hope that tree grows 20' tall and wide!

I'll build a tree house there and stay.

Lol Suzi.... Very very nice.

Was it a breba or main crop?

It had to be a Breba.  But it was juicy!  The birds got the first one.  We bought this fig at 5' tall.  Took a while for it to put on leaves.  But it had 2 figs on board when we planted it.  The birds got the first one.  New leaves grew and shaded the other one.   That was the glory!

I think Kadota sounds ho hum, but that is a really good fig, and I recommend it!

Suz

Thanks for letting us know about the Kadota! My 2 year old has 2 breba and about 5 main crop figs. I have not paid attention to them much but I will keep checking the figs more often. They look like little green pears, I hope they taste as you say. I got it from a Home Depot, I think for $7 on sale.

That Kadota sounds really nice Suzi.  If you ever get a chance to post a photo of a ripe one I would love to see it.  Thanks for sharing.

what do they call this.. zone envy! i have total of two breba still having on the trees. one LdA, and one Paradiso something or the other. hope the birds don't get to them. they helped me knocking off VdB breba earlier.

Kadota makes my day too, its under appreciated.

elin, you are right!  I bought the fig at a wholesale garden place on a whim.  They get all the rejects from the retailers.  I know it's a big producer for dried figs.  But I don't like those.  So I was amazed at the flavor of a fresh Kadota!  It's truly an amazing fig.

As far as zones, maybe it doesn't like cold climates.  Not sure, but it sure likes mine!  9b.  Hot, dry summersm mild winters (now and then a freeze for a nano).

I will say that this is the BEST fig I have ever tasted.  I think it depends on your palate.  This one tastes figgy, honey, rich.  Nutty is missing.  But that's ok with me.

I have an LSU Gold with about 12 figs swelling.  Wonder how they compare.

Time will tell.

Suzi

Suzi, Did your fig look anything like this? I really like mine as well.

It looked exactly like that!  Best fig ever!  No wonder it's commercially produced.  They dry it, but fresh, it's amazing!!  Mine was yellow with brown spots, soft to touch, and dead ripe!  I got lucky!  We have tons of hawks, blackbirds, other birds, voles, possums, raccoons, but none of them saw this one because the leaves are big and provide coverage.

Actually, prior to this, if somebody here had Kadota cuttings, I would have shrugged them off.  That would have been a bad choice.

The Kadota fig, cut in half, is a mouthful of pure joy!  YUM!  And then, you get the other half!  OMG!

Suzi

Kadota gets a bad rap from a lot of people. But I tell you what, if picked at the right time, it is super fantastic! Excel is a child of Kadota. It too is excellent. You can't go wrong with either one and yes, they love the heat!

Was the skin thick?

Thin Skin.  Almost seedless.  Yummy!

Suzi we had the same results last summer. It's my husbands favorite. They were super sweet and I agree pure honey when allowed to get "bruised" looking.

I planted both mine in ground last spring.  0 degree winter on at least two nights maybe more.  Both froze back to the ground one is starting to send up a  sprout from the ground nothing yet on the other one.  No protection was given.  Doubt if I get to taste one this year.  I tasted one last year but it was a bad year with all the rain and I don't remember the one I got as remarkable in any way.  Now I have hope for the new growth.

I received a couple of Kadotas from UCD this year and they rooted very easily and are growing nicely. I'm not sure how well they will do here in NJ but I thought they would be worth a try. I also received some Dottato cuttings from a generous forum member and the varieties page says they are the same. Will compare results and report my findings

A Kadota is reviewed here  in the below link:
Kadota: The pert green skin gives way to a heart of amethyst. The taste is appealingly complex; “green beans,” “grapes,” “apricot” and “vanilla” were the notes we blurted out between bites.

I would like to try the diana too- they look similar.
have to get the genetic material first.

My Kadota split most of its figs last year with all of the rain we had in the southeast, but it did put on a ton. Between the winter freeze and borers, I had to cut it down to the ground, so I hope its new shoots put something on this year!
