I don't even know what to say...

Thanks so much to Petechanr. I am quite literally speech less. He gave me a beautiful looking Dominick fig tree. And almost 5billion cuttings i dont know what to do with them I honestly don't know what to do. I can't use this many cutting so I have to resort to giving some away as I'm already over loaded. And I'm getting cuttings from Mario_1.

Okay so this is the plan I will take inventory of all the cuttings and I will list the cuttings for free but the buyer pays shipping and the cost of a bubble envelope or a flat rate box. I can't use this many cuttings seriously I'm going to go insane. Thanks so much everyone.

But Petechanr should give me permission to do this because these technically are still his cutting I just can't use this many so if it alright with him I will give some away to anyone that wants them.

Holy crap, Matthew. Looks like we both hit the jackpot today. I just secured myself Figo Preto, which is basically Black Madeira. Many on here say it's the best fig or one of the best figs out there, and you've got it as well!

In addition to Black Madeira, you can't really go wrong with the large majority of those. There really is a lot to consider, but first I'd figure out how much you can handle and go from there. Some of the unknowns are well, "unknowns." Those are probably at the top of the list for removal. However, I'm sure there's plenty of collectors on here interested in unknowns.

If you end up getting rid of some Matthew, Smith is one that's been on my list for a while.

Probably best for some others near you to respond. I'm def not the guy cuz I'm a newbie :/ obviously Black Madeira is awesome if you have a long enough season or can provide it with this by using a greenhouse or something. VDB is suppose to be amazingly tasty. Kathleen Black is supposedly the new queen of black Figs but some say it can take 2-3 years to produce but idk. JH Adriatic is one of the best green Figs and seems to do well for most. I believe, could be wrong, that desert king is good mostly just to have an early crop but doesn't produce a main crop. So its good to have Figs as early in the season as possible. Black Greek and CdDB is also said to be great and are sought after. That's what I know which isn't much but since no one else had replied thought I would help. Your lucky enough to get all those awesome cuttings that most of us newbies would kill for, not literally... I guess lol. You could try rooting them all cuz all of them probably won't make it. That way you get what you want and don't keep a few and most don't make it. But obviously if you already have it or don't have the zone/temps for it then I'm sure others would love to grab them up. My couple cents on it. Sorry for the long reply that might not help.

Matthew, if you are new to rooting, I am going to suggest that you not give too many away.  Not all which you root successfully will make it to the 1 gal. pot stage and some will fail to root at all.  My suggestion to you would be to start one or two more than what you think you can handle and to keep just as many back ups as you start. So, if you loose some along the way, you can start a replacement.  Beyond that, you are a very generous young man and I am sure those who benefit from your generosity will be very appreciative. Nice to see that members were able to get you started with such a nice assortment of varieties for you to sample.

PS. Think you will like the Dominick... I know its turned out to be one of my favorites.

Thanks guys but the problem here right now is I have no idea how to mass produce the cuttings. And I will definitely try to get as many as possible. And grow them but there are people that would love to grow their own trees.

Is there anyone that would be able to physically tell we which of these are the best and will produce for me here?

Matthew- being I am building my list as well and I am in the same climate. These are the following varieties I think you should keep for cold hardiness and flavor.

Desert king
Adriatic JH
Brooklyn dark
Bryant dark
Black madeira
Panache
VdB
White sicilian
Col De dames (any)
Smith

There are too many to choose from. Try to grow a tree from each variety. Then you dont have to choose lol. They are all great varieties. Congrats on your hord of great cutting.
Petechanr. You are very generous person. Richie from louisiana

Might help if you say how you want to grow them? In pot or in ground? How many you want to keep?

You could also do a search for variety name ripening to get descriptions on them.

Make sure to keep them wrapped up and refrigerated until you decide.

These are ones that I've read about and have wanted to grow in zone 6 in containers sooner or later:
Black Madeira (although it sounds late and temperamental, everyone seems to say it tastes great)
Igo
Desert king (breba only which has it's challenges)
Smith
Cddb
Lsu gold
Celeste
Panache (late as well but pretty)
Alma
Pastilliere
Kathaleen black (has a rep for taking a few years to fruit but with the wait)
Vdb
Raspberry latte
Peter honey
Jh Adriatic

okay I will take what I can get out of them I'm currently over whelmed with all these cutting and I have more coming from mario_1. Probably going to grow as many as I can and give them a away for a cheap price. Will be growing pretty much all in pots if not I will do a couple in ground because I have some space.

Matt, while your motive to share is commendable, Marianna is right. The process of rooting cuttings can be very tricky even for those experienced. Many things can go wrong. Give yourself some sucesses, than you can share what left over. Good luck. Just my opinion.

Thanks Dave I'm already on a crazy luck streak with rooting cuttings but I know it's probably running out and I feel that it's my job to share what others can't get themselves.

Start rooting some, keep the rest (or most of the rest) in storage.  If all of your cuttings survive as plants, you can still give the extra cuttings away in the spring.  If not you have some for backup and have time to start more in a couple months.  And if you get extra plants you can always give them away or trade them.

If there are some you clearly do not want, gift them now.

Good luck!

Yea I'll do all I can. Is there any way to efficiently root this many cuttings?

Yea probably going to pot it and try if it anything doesn't do to well I will give away or sell for a cheap price depending on how hard it's going to be to do this.

Secaucus NJ? We're next door neighbors, I live in East Rutherford

Oh really cool! Idek so many people grew figs here.

How generous of you to offer to help out. As for what varieties to keep, I think you have received some good advice already.

For rooting a lot I would suggest root riot cubes. There are a few threads on them in the forum....

http://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/search?searchid=38601782

Good luck! And take others advice keep more than you want because some will fail....

Why is everyone saying I have a Preto? It's not on the list is it?

Oh okay.
