I finally won a contest

The California rare fruit growers hosts an annual fruit photo shoot contest. This year I submited one photo, I didn't win first place, but at least it's encouraging to win something.

Lovely photo Bass. Do these gooseberries taste better than the green coloured ones?

I really like them, they're way sweeter. Remind me of grape and sweet passion fruit. Most green ones I tried were tangy.

I agree my parents have the green ones and I dont really like them too much not sweet enought for my liking. What variety is that if you dont mind me asking?

This is a variety called Tixia.

Thanks Bass

Way to go Bass !

Bass, That is a great looking picture. Your pictures of fruit are among the best I have seen in a long time. They are the type of pictures that make a person want to buy the plant. Bob

Bob thanks for the compliment. The beauty of the fruit is so pleasing to the eyes. All of us enjoy taking pictures of our fruits.

Is

Bass, have you tried Invicta Gooseberry? Very common in british Isles.  Invicta is a great Gooseberry and used for Pies and Yummy and strong Gooseberry wine. I tried this wine in Ireland on a trip and I almost died and got arrested. This wine was very good, but madonna mia, what an attitude adjuster!!! I wanted to fight!!! Ciao

I've heard of the invicta variety, but never tried them. My guess is that it's not as sweet. The description sounds good, a very large fruit.
Here's the description for Tixia:
Zones 3-7-(PPAF) Jumbo bright red fruits on nearly thornless canes. Developed in Switzerland where gooseberries are favorites, Tixia allows for painless picking as its one year canes have few thorns, and those that remain are relatively soft. Huge, elongated, smooth red fruits with succulent 'sweet-tart' flavor are delicious fresh and also make mouth- watering pies, jams and jellies. Fruit ripens in July. Strong, upright, high-yielding plants are mildew resistant.

congrats Bass

Hi Bass,  Your gooseberry photo is just beautiful.  Thank you for sharing it here.  I have the Tixia, but it has not fruited yet.  Hopefully it will this Spring and I also hope the fruits will be as good as your photo. Yum.

Congratulations Bass on your award.
That's one beautiful picture you've included.

I know the feeling all too well when you get those kind of awards and I hope you get many more.

Some things money just can't buy.

That Gooseberry Picture is super Perfect in Quality.
Congratulation.
Too bad you did not say what Goosebery cultivar it is.
It looks exactly like My Jahn Praerie Gooseberry.

He did it's called tixia

Thanks Herman, Jahns Prairie is very similar from the pictures I've seen. Mine is called Tixia, it's very sweet.
These photos are published in the CRFG magazine. I remember seeing Jon's photos in the magazine a couple times as well.

Oh, I am so jealous. I mean the prize is good, but having such as beautiful fruit is soo much better. I grew up in Europe and I still remember how great this fruit tasted from my Great Grandfather garden. When I move to North Carolina from Florida I was excited because it was better climate for gooseberries. I did not know they are illegal in NC. What a shame, people in here do not know what they are missing.
