I Give Up!

Ok All,

I gave into the temptation and my lack of patience with just nursing my cuttings. I just ordered a Celeste and a Marseilles from Edible Landscaping. They were on sale, so I had to go for it. I'm weak.

I know the feeling Steve!

same dog bit you, ate me up!:)

Cecil

Now I'll have to sit at my window and wait for the delivery :o)

Both of my Celeste are still ripening great tasting figs.

Cecil

Was EL the origin of your Celeste? All the good reviews of this variety have had my mouth watering for a while. I also understand it is hardy so should do OK here in NJ if taken care of over the winter. Any experience with Marseilles?

Steve- :)) Glad you could join me , hehehehe.  You were soo strong yesterday? Just kiddin, I love my Celeste, dont feel bad my one tree I was going to order from Jon has turned into 4!!!! Im thinking what you were saying... where the heck am I going to put all these, lol. You will love your Celeste, how do you protect your fig tree from the winter weather?

Hi Steve,

You asked where my Celeste came from?

They came from two different sources, both bought from local nursery's.

My oldest Celeste was bought for Brn. Turkey, it turned out to be a very good Celeste.

Edit} Steve I forgot about you asking about Marseilles ?
I do not have one, but have ordered a Blk Marseilles VS from Herman
it should make it here later this Yr.

Kim you are only about a hundred mi North of us, so I would say your tree will make it OK, I asked the same question you are asking last yr.

Fignut asked why winterize in zone 8?
Mountainman, said "Cecil don't kill your trees with love"
I listened to both, because as you have probably already found out, they know their stuff as far as figs go.

Good luck to both of Ya'll :)
Cecil

Kim - Your excitement yesterday got the best of me! I agree with Cecil, you probably don't have to winterize in Tx but you do in NJ. Last year I built a wire cage, filled with dry leaves and covered with plastic. Worked like a charm. This year the tree is bigger so I'm working on a different approach. Haven't finalized it yet but it is the same principle ... wrap tree in insulating material, protect from moisture, allow for air and heat escape.

Cecil - Is the tree you ordered very different from the Marseilles from EL? EL's website implied that they were in stock and ready to ship. I'll have to call on Monday to get an estimated delivery.

Kim, I live in Northwest Arkansas and I do not do any thing to protect my Celeste trees during the winter.  They come through the winter without any damage.

Vern

Steve,
VERY much different!

Check both out at figs4fun

Cecil

Steve, I knew my big list would get you ;)) But isnt the excitment of getting the trees great!!
Cecil, lol kill em with love, thats my style! I have been known to over love my plants--aka love them to death! I feel a little silly now, but hey thats great news! Aint Texas weather grand :)
Vern, good I will let Celest be, do you think its still ok even though its young, its about 4 ft.
Thank you for the advice, I was ready to do Steves' method, wire cage and all!

Steve,

I have an EL Marseilles which I got last year (quart sized, I think). Its in a pot on the deck. Grew like a weed, but hasn't put on a fig this year. The Violette de Bordeaux that came with it has only put on 3 this year. Both should put on more next year.

Scott

Scott - I hope the Marseilles does well for me in NJ. Glad yours is doing well.

Cecil - I will check out the differences. I expected that after reading all the Celeste posts. Seems to be quite a variation.

Kim - It's all your fault ;) I couldn't take it anymore. Bad enough I just bought 2, I was then looking at others. Took alot of restraint to keep it to my original purchase only. I may have to build a big greenhouse for my figs (and me when the wife finds out more trees are on their way). You know, its fall and a long winter is ahead to dream about more figgies!

Kim, my fig trees are young.  They made it through the winter fine.  The worst thing that could happen to your figs is that they would die back to the grown.  They will come back.  Mine did not die back to the grown and I am in a little cold climate than you.

Vern

Oh good! That is a load off, Cecil and Vern have you ever had a problem with leaf rust? Two of mine have really had a bad case of it this summer and now...  What do you do for that?

Steve- Check your email! I have to not buy another tree for a season at least, lol. Im going to limit myself now to only cuttings....for a while ;)

Kim
Will do. Yup, I'm trying to be good too.

Yes Steve is trying to be real good..LOL
No more??
