I got my first Chiappetta fig

I got a taste of one of my Chiappetta figs. It wasn't fully ripe but either one of my relatives or the neighbors dog knocked it off the tree. It should of been on the tree for at least 4 or 5 more days but.....

The fig started growing on the tree while it was growing in the house and has been in the midst of the fig shuffle for the past month making the transition to outside. Even though it wasn't growing in ideal conditions and the fig was removed too soon from the tree the overall taste was good. Sweet with a bit of mellon flavor. It's a keeper in my book. I have another fig that I suspect will be ripe in a couple weeks. I will be guarding it to make sure nothing knocks it off early so that I can get the full flavor. And that fig is on the large size.

Hey, that looks pretty good for an early fig!! yum.

I thought that might be Italian for Chia Pet.

love fig with melon flavor. let me know when you have some cuttings for trade.

Pete -- I got the tree from Art (kubota1). He would have cuttings sooner than I would since my tree is still on the small side.

The original tree was brought here to PA from Italy over 100 years ago. Art got starts from it and passed some out and that's how I got it. Wish my tree was bigger so I could give to others but I'll have to wait on that.

Here's a link about the tree that Art posted. http://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post/Free-cuttings-6023167

thanks tony :)

Looks good Tony. I just picked my 3rd one today, It wasn't anything to write home about. The main crop is the one to look forward to. The funny thing is that my breba were more red than purple/black.

Pete, Here is a pic. of the main crop. They get darker and larger.

This fig is from the same tree. It's larger than the first fig that was knocked off and has a whitish cast to it. The picture makes it appear to be blue but in reality it's like a white wax coating. More different than any fig I've seen. I like the look.
