I have a sickness and my wife wants to commit me

I turned my office into a mini greenhouse. My wife LOVES it... not really. I told her it's only 90 small figs plus another 20-30 that are currently rooting. No big deal, right?

Nice! I don't feel alone. I went crazy this winter also. Our home office is loaded. I have two fold tables, barely any room for more cups and there are five bins of cuttings more in various states on the floor. Spring can not get here soon enough! There is also a fridge in the basement with just cuttings in it. I have to wait to make room before I start them and a garage full of trees.

Haha, I'm a newbie but today I was outside thinking:
1) how nice it would be to move to a house with a bigger yard to grow in and
2) giving the devil eye to my neighbor's shade trees.

@71GTO- Your CM4/7 all rooted so I had to redistribute some of them. Let's do some more trading in the spring!

@springlakenj- I love your area! I used hang out at the Parker House and eat mini burgers and drink beers on the porch. If pick the right tree and put it in the ground it will give you plenty of figs.

That's fantastic. So organized. Looks like I have lots of catching up to do.

Hey Jason,

I think I caught this sickness from you. Looks like you better finish the garage because you and your figs might get booted out of the living space. I have at least 6 large bins filled with cuttings and the 1 light set up is all most full with started plants. My wife shakes her head and laughs. I'll see you in a couple weeks.

Yeah definitely! Spring can't get here soon enough I want to get all these outside. I'm glad they all took for you.

Looks like it's time to build a habitorium.

Just gotta say Jason. It's a thing of beauty! You're off to a good start ;) .

Everything looks wonderful. :)

Oh how nice to have a beautiful/understanding/supportive wife...

(mine sure loves eating delicious ripe figs off them trees, but somehow I

have to find a way past-her to root some more in a very-good kitchen-spot)

Jason, looks great. Alot more tidy than my setup.

George, it is nice to have a wife that understands. Mine just tells everybody that at least she knows where I am. In the back yard.

I was getting ready to start rooting my cuttings this week and low and behold it looks like I will be heading to Nashville for 2-3 weeks of work training and then back home.
The first thought in my head was: well, I could DRIVE (company is offering to fly me RT at their expense and give me a rental car plus gas money for the whole time) to Nashville and take all my cuttings with me. BUT, I think I will have to wait on getting the cuttings going until I get back home in mid-March.  I may change my mind and load them into my car.
Not to mention I have to entrust the care of various plants to my husband. SCARY FOR SURE.  He did okay last year when I had to go out of town and I only lost one (that he had moved and forgot about!) At least for this scenario the few plants that are awake are in the south kitchen window and a very captive audience.
I cannot wait to get started!

sara - if you scare your husband that you will put him out of your wine and jam programs i am sure he will do much better job!

good luck in nashville :-)

Nice set up Jason, I see you like most others are always pressed for space. I'm no different.I think I found a solution to my problem. I went to an auction and purchased a FEMA trailer for 2500 dollars. I will convert it into my man cave. I will gut the bathroom and bunks out of one end and convert it into a storage area for my fishing tackle and will have a jig tying station in it. The other end which is the main bedroom I will convert into my wood turning and pen making room. The middle section which is the kitchen/living area I will turn into a seed and tree starting room. There is ample window lighting to grow the cuttings for a while and I'll have water available. I hope it works out.

@Jason, my office looks similar to yours, maybe worse.  And that's just the ones that I started in November.  I've still got a bunch more that I just got a couple weeks ago that will have to go somewhere when they start rooting.  I'm thinking I'll ask one of the kids to give up their room and bunk with their sibling so that I'll have more space for the figs :)

So far my wife has been pretty patient but I think she has about hit her limit.  I keep telling her it's just till the spring, only another month or two.  But the groundhog saw his shadow, so we'll see.  My only hope is that she likes the taste of them enough to tolerate my operation as the years go by.  So far we haven't really tasted any since this is my first year of fig obsession.  She has taken to calling it my "fig farm."  For her that's a joke, but to me it's an aspiration.

@Gene, that should be a great setup for you and a great idea.  If there was some way you could put in a huge window on the south facing side of that trailer, then you would really be in business.

Wow Gene, that seems pretty nice for $2500.

Gene, that's a deal. No way we could get one for that price. Would be a perfect place to winterize fig trees here.

Gene,

That is one brilliant way to create a one's 'man-cave'!

Just make sure it remains so.

Good luck...

So jealous of Gene. What a great idea!

Jason with such a neat and tidy setup, I personally don't see the problem, but I have the "disease" too and a wife that actually has become very supportive. Has your wife noticed the cat pee smell yet?

Gene, you should do great with that trailer. When you showed me those pictures yesterday, it reminded me of Richard Watts starting his figs in an old van in his driveway! This looks ideal. Be sure to tie it down good to save it from the hurricanes.

Rob, yes if I find that I need more light I can cut out and install another.

Paully, that is my plan. To use it to start cuttings and seedlings and to bring them in for the winter if necessary.

Gorgi, I will have the only keys to it so it is mine and will stay mine.

Tim I plan to anchor it real good because now that I have it I surely don't want to lose it. Speaking of Richard, I haven't talked to him or Edith in a while. Looks like I need to make a phone call.

Gene...too bad you just can't put skylights or skytubes in that bad boy!  When you said FEMA trailer I had the storage units in my head.  Hey--those would work too.
But what a fabulous find for you.

Jason ,
Your "fig office" looks great .
Growing in a nice room like that would be too much pressure for me.
I am glad I have a basement where I don't have to worry about spilling anything , but the temperature is cooler than ideal.
