I Lead The Dogs out

Yesterday, I lead (most) of my dogs out  (aka them figs)!  Less those in my  garage
that are  still  dormant, and which will be lead out this week.  They came from GH's
(fully leaved ) and an other 'warmer-than-expected' wintering spot that  are
breaking leaves. Surprise, I could not find a good  shady place in  my  backyard
under big (other) trees are not fully leaved yet. I expect some  UV damage, but at
least, the immediate weather forecast is cloudy/rain or the next 2-3 days.

Man , these (many) figs do require a lot of work within a very short and critical
time interval. Not sure if I can handle this any more...

LOL George...I'm laughing WITH you and NOT at you.  It is indeed a lot of work.  Down here we had two freezes after the figs had broken dormancy.  It was a LOT of work hauling over 200 (counting little 1 gal. plants) potted figs either into my house or into the carport - then back outside.  Then this was repeated two weeks later :)  I also repotted well over 100 figs in Feb. - most 5 gal. up to 30" pots - with a lot of root pruning. Then came rooting cuttings...work...work...work!  Other than airlayering a few plants with RKN and potting rooted cuttings as necessary I hope most of the work is done for this year.

I hope all your figs get acclimated quickly and safely to the new growing year.

Henry

george,
I know you like it. I'm sure you'll be doing the same thing next year. looking at the forecast I see Tuesday will reach 30 degrees, for our area, I hope that's not the case.

Hi Bass,

That's EXACTLY what happened down here (but over a month ago).  Twice after figs broke dormancy the night time temps dropped below 30.  There was also a later "scare" that it would do so for a third time, but it only dropped to 32 or 33.

I know there for a few weeks that between hauling figs to safety from freezing weather, repotting and setting cuttings to root it was like I had a second full time job :)

Now I feel guilty, I only hauled my potted figs into the garage for a couple of nights this winter when it was supposed to be in the 20's. The rest of the time, they lived quite happily on the deck, despite multiple sub 32F nights. All have leafed out well.

I took mine out this morning --  its 20*C( 68*F) in the day & night is 8*C(48*F). Would have some sun burn leaves & hopefully the fruits would be sweeter now. Wife had 3 Lattarula fruits this morning, not as sweet becos they ripen in the house but she still likes them.

I have the opposite problem. Wednesday, when I potted up some new rooted cuttings, the high was 58F, moist and cloudy and today we were 93F, windy and almost no humidity at all. Most still look not too bad, but some are definitely no happy. Isn't weather fun?!

It was 97 degrees over here!  My little guys are a bit shriveled......
