I love Air Layers!!!

Today I took out 3 air layers. One from Strawberry Verte, VdB and the other one from and Unknown fig that it's very strong and vigorous, I will use it as a root stook to graft a fig that has a severe case of FMV.

This last air layer, was done different, insted of using a cup, I used plastic wrap. It's more work, but It retains the moisture a little better and the roots looks better. But definitely the cup metod is way more easy.

These looks great Mahdi.  What soil media did you put in the cups and did you use any rooting hormone ?

Those are some serious roots.  How long did it take?

Thanks Naeem!

I used promix and for rooting hormone I used clonex gel.

It took 5 weeks, too long for me. I usually remove it after 3 to 4 weeks, but I was busy. But I think in the future I might leave them for 5 weeks, I like all those roots.

Mahdi, Beautiful air layers and absolutely beautiful roots! Which Promix did you use? Thanks for posting! : )

Thanks Frank!!

I used Promix TH-1.
I think most of the Promix will work well, the important thing is to put the promix in the cup wet, but not soggy and use a Plastic Wrap around the cup to prevent evaporation. Use aluminium foil around the cup to protect the roots from the sun. Also, I like to score the branch I want to air layer, it will give you more roots in less time.

impressive roots!

Superb!

Wow

Nice air layers.

Thanks guys!! The trees are in 3 gallon pots. They are receiving sun in the morning only. They are doing very well.
Next week they are going to full sun.

Was the top of the plastic cup covered with plastic wrap and foil or only foil?

The whole cup was covered in plastic wrap. It's very important to do it, to avoid loss of humidity in the soil. And the aluminium foil will protect the roots against the sun.

In the past I was only using aluminium foil only and then water the air layer almost daily, but this way is more easy.

Nice job, Those look great for 5 weeks.

With roots like that in such a short amount of time you're going to make me consider using a rooting hormone.  I did some air layers last summer and I took them off in 4 weeks, but the roots didn't look anything like yours.

Does grafting help rid a tree of FMV?

Rooting hormone and scoring the branch increase the amount of roots.

I posted about a tree with a severe case of FMV, most members with lot of experience advice me to graft the afected fig into a healthy and vigorous rootstock. I will give it a try.

Great job !!!

Great job !!!

I second GButera's question.  Can you describe the dimensions of the scored area?  Were the scores all along the area covered with promix or just a small area?

Thanks!

I'm posting a picture of one of the branches. I just score about 1.5" to 2" in length. It is very important to score in the side of at least one node. If you can get two nodes it will be better, but sometimes the distance between one node and the second one are too distant, so at least make sure you are scoring along side one node.
In the photo, you can see that I'm scoring between two nodes and it's a thin scoring with a length of 2". The cup I'm using is 6".

I see I've been doing it wrong.  I scored along the bottom, whenever I remembered to score ;-)
Thanks for the picture.
