I made a mistake on shipping cuttings...

This message goes specifically to the first dozen or so people I have shipped cuttings out to.

At the post office I was using the automated shipping/postage machine for processing some of your packages.

Apparently I had made a mistake on how I was running some of the packages through by selecting the wrong option. Resulting in an under charge in some of the postage.

Because of this, some of you may be informed by your local post office that a small amount of postage is due on your package.

I apologize for this and it certainly wasn't deliberate. Just a bone-head mistake on my part. I didn't catch until a postal worker came out to empty the drop box I was using.

If you are asked to compensate some postage, be sure to let me know. I can easily refund the amount via Paypal.

Sorry for the error. Thank you for your patience.

I'm curious what option you chose for what type of package and how your choice was incorrect.  I wonder if I have made the same mistake before though no one has complained about postage being due.  I typically ship cuttings in large envelopes where the walls are embedded with with bubble wrap.  I then indicate that these packages are less than 3/4 inch in width and have often wondered if that is the correct choice.

Seems you hit the nail on the head Steve. I ship most small orders in padded envelopes.

According to the postal worker I spoke to, if you select the "large envelope option" (less than 3/4" in thickness) shipping cost will be less. But, apparently, the size packages I've been shipping are more in the "parcel/package" category. Therefore, I will be selecting the package/parcel option from now on. It looks like it will only average about $1 or so more per package.

I'm guessing that many local post offices must let this error slide a lot because I've been doing it this way for a couple seasons now without any word back from recipients.

But I'd rather pay the correct shipping up front so no problems come up down the road. I sure wouldn't someone to miss out on their package because I made a mistake with postage :-/.

If it looks like I'm beginning to lose too much $ in shipping, I may have to bump my minimum shipping charges to $4 instead of just $3. Not too big of a deal I think.......

Bill,

I received my cuttings today thanks.

The envelope was stamped a couple times with a red "postage due" stamp...but they delivered it.

Not sure what the post office is expecting, that I will come in and pony up the extra postage? I might if they were holding the package.

An understandable mistake. I ran into similar problems when shipping mushroom cultures. Some postal workers will let it go, and some will not.

Leander.

You let a cat out of the bag (such a goofy saying)! Do you still sell mushroom cultures? Ya gotta tell us more now :-) .

KYFig. Yea that's funny that they delivered it anyway. But glad you got your cuttings safe and sound. Hope they meet your expectations.

My package was stamped postage due too, but was delivered.

Nice cuttings Bill, and yeah, postage due stamped on the envelope.

I haven't sold any cultures for awhile, I suppose I could if there was some interest. The problem arises when people find out that cultures sometimes take awhile, and most people want things immediately.

This makes me think of a few years ago I received a letter in the mail with a 2 cents postage stamp.  The letter inside wanted me to send them $$$ to learn how their letter got to me with just a 2 cents worth of postage.  Just think of the money I could save on mailings!

I gave it to the post master who seemed very interested to know how this got by them and so they sent for the information on my form.  A new letter arrived after several days, also with a 2 cent stamp.  Basically it said by placing the 2 cent stamp on the letter you were making the postal service an offer to mail the letter and were under no obligation whatsoever to affix the "required" postage.  They would either accept the offer or reject it.

Apparently they accepted your postage due mailings.

Reishi or morels and I'm game.
