I made some Fig Leaf Tea

I dried the leaves I had from pruning the Jolly Tiger a while back and made some tea.  It tastes like green tea and mint to me.

Nice video Tom.  I use a french press and let the leaves sit for about 15 minutes before pressing.  Lots of flavor and darker color.  I like to add honey to mine.  Can't say it's delicious, but it's good.

Love it and researching fig leaf tea is what got me into figs to start with.

I wonder if the leaves from different varieties are as different as the figs they produce?  I was thinking of putting honey in it too.  I was saying to myself there goes the diabetes benefits when I was adding the sugar.

My plan was to try oven drying some on low heat 170 F like I do persimmon leaves.  This turns the leaves brown and does away with the "green" taste that I don't mind but my wife doesn't like.  Just don't have any fig leaves to spare at the moment.  Everyone should also try persimmon leaf tea with honey.  I bet they would make a good blend.

I will have to try that! Thanks for shareing

Good question.  I'll bet they taste similar though.  Worth a try.
You can try adding stevia powder to sweeten it if you don't want to do honey.

I never had dried leaves tea, but can say that fresh leaves tea is superior  than any of these tea sold on the stores.   The smell is  fabulous and so is the taste.

just pick a couple of leaves, pour hot water in and let it simmer, add a bit of honey and or cinammon, and it is perfect. I grew up drinking this.

In Brazil, every year, there are many cases of home made bronze oils used for taning, using the fig leaf tea. BAD IDEA> One must be careful as the tea of green leaves can cause severe burns if one puts on the skin as sun bathing.

Grasa,

I agree.  I've tried both dried and fresh leaves with similar results.

I like fig leaf tea too.  I have some Korean tea mugs with the removable porcelain filter in the top that are excellent for leaf type teas.  Fig tea feels like a restorative to me.  I think I am going to have to make some today!

Grasa, you have me wanting to try it your way now :)
When you say pour hot water in and let it simmer, are you simmering on the stove, or steeping in a container off the heat.  And is the hot water boiling, or just steamy?
Thank you!

6 Health Dangers of Stevia

it has a few drawbacks for some people.

Greg, you treat the fresh picked leaf as you do a tea bag from the store. cut it up or crumble it, put in a cup and pour boild water over it. By the time it cools to be able to drink, it is done. Add a little bit of cinamoon and a tiny honey or sugar sprinkle.  But you can drink it without the sugar also. I had that in the morning before running to school when I was growing up. if the leaves simmer for long, they don't taste as good.( Like old coffee also is not good)

I've got to try it with honey

Doug

These leaves from the Unknown Lake Spur were sun dried on my driveway in a big piece of nylon netting...

Took three dry leaves, crumbled and simmered in a covered pan for about 20 minutes, strained through a handkerchief, added a bit of raw honey and added water to make one quart.  It made the whole house smell really good.  This is probably one of the best teas I ever had, no kidding.  Wife even likes it and that speaks volumes.

I have been making iced fig leaf tea as an experiment the past month - take a half gallon to work most days.  I have mixed in mint leaves and mixed in decaf tea as well, I like it best with the mint added, no sweetener.

I have a food dehydrator that I have been drying leaves with - I don't think I have seen enough sun to dry leaves in a month?

Its been awhile since I made Fig Tea, I end up adding to much sugar.  I will experiment and see if some varieties have a better taste. Has anyone seen if varieties taste better, sweeter..???
