I met the fig man of New Mexico

I had a brief visit with Lloyd Kreitzer yesterday.  He has many types of figs that do well unprotected at ~6000 feet in New Mexico.  He has a web site and will be posting varietal descriptions 'soon'   :)      A lot of his unique figs were found growing uncared for and unnamed.  He has no idea if some of them are previously known and named or not.  For those of you who live in short season climates, he's your source.     Of course if you have low sunshine like the PNW you'd still need his early season varieties and it's impossible to know how they'd do for you.  NM gets a lot of sun.

I've encouraged him to come on here.  Each of his trees has a story and his love of fig trees comes through as he tells them.  He makes his living selling, teaching about and caring for fig trees.

Wow!  Thanks for sharing that!  I'm going to dry some leaves and make some of that tea!  Great website!  Looking forward to his posts here!

Bob, I talked to him on the phone for quite a while a few weeks ago.  He's a character!  I'm thinking about visiting him next year.  When I talked to him, he said his figs don't have names, they just have a story from the person that gave it to him.  If I lived close to him I would help him number and document his figs.  I like hearing stories of fig trees. There are a lot of unknown figs out there and to me those are of interest to me.  Thanks for posting.

cheers!

Excellent post, thank you sharing!

This man needs to join the forum! He would fit right in..

I'm pretty sure I've talked him in to it.  He's starting to write some stories.  He does have names for the figs so he does know what's what.    :)

But when he found the figs they didn't have names so a fig that he's given a name to may have another name somewhere else.

I spoke with him a couple of years ago and was going to meet him at one of the farmers markets he was attending.  When I got to the market, he was busy talking to others and my mom was pestering me to leave.  So I put it off for another day.

Round him up. Head him out. I have a place in my heart for stories of how people came by their plants and what they have done with them.

Thank you I will call him

What's the matter Jennifer? Can't sleep?

Got fig fog?
