I might get to taste my first fig of 2013 in less than a week!

I started several Carini cuttings in September of 2012 as a first time propagator.  I left figs on some of the plants just to see how far they would make it.  Since putting this guy outside for 2 weeks now, one of the figs is swelling up nicely and getting shiny and soft.  It's almost golf ball sized now.  At this rate, it may be ready to pick soon!  Not sure if the taste will be as good, considering it's been inside all winter, but I'll update this thread with the results!

Nicely done sir!

That is amazing!  Just don't be mad at it, if fruit is not good, since the general assertion is fruits are better on 2-3 y. old and better yet on 5y.o.

I'm not expecting great flavor from this fig, considering its age and circumstance, but it will be exciting to pick one in April.  :)

wow nice job......

As long as the plant's growing you're fine.  I'd use some Osmocote 14-14-14 on it.  Good luck.  You may be pleasantly surprised.  The figs I've tasted on less than 6 mo old plants have been very good, but they were main crop.

BTW, I wouldn't hold my breath in 7 days.  It has to droop to be ripe.  Depending on temps you could be 2-3 weeks away.  Don't let it get overly saturated.

And do give it plenty of light (keep those sugars going from leaves above the fig down into the fig during this final ripening).  (Sunny days are better than overcast days in that final stage of ripening, imo).

Mike

p.s.  Congrats.  And I'm jealous... I've got a few breba forming on a couple of indoor trees that I jumpstarted, but I'm probably 60 - 70 days away from any ripe figs on my own trees yet.  I've been eating lots of dried figs and Bass' jam though.  :-)

Thanks everyone.  I did keep it sheltered from the rain the other day, then put it back out in the sun yesterday.  Hoping the squirrels and birds don't take interest in it.
