i miss good old days when i didn't have any fig trees..

well.. not really true, but at least i didn't know what i was missing. i need fresh fig... reallly bad. last yr this time, i was enjoy fruits of my labor. after work everyday, i'll be out in on the deck, picking though the figs to see which one is ripe and will be enjoying my afternoon snack. on weekends, i'll be getting up late and eating few with coffee.. my wife would enjoy few in the evening with wine and cheese..

and this yr? nada.. they are all still green and not even one is turning color.. need fresh figs. it will be another month or so till the first main crop will be ripen.

on the strange side of it, some of the trees are now putting on the figs. and lot of them. i'm hoping they will be ripe by mid oct. any new ones by aug. 1 will be knocked off.

Pete this week calamyurna figs should be showing up in your markets

Good luck Pete!  We are in the full swing of things down here on the bayou in Zone 9.  I am getting some new figs this year so it's really exciting.  I have an Encanto Farms St. Anthony that will be ready in the next couple of days.  Yum (I hope)...To come still (that I haven't had before) are my Sicilian Black Italian, Peter's Honey, Black Mission, and maybe Genovese Nero will have time too.  Anyway hopefully you start to ripen soon!  Dam the late spring and rains!

dan, i might have to go to local wholefood and see what they have. or just settle for dried figs. but they don't taste like ones off the tree..

Whole foods? Lol they have very unripe Sierra here. My giant has cooler figs and more ripe. Find a small produce market.

Pete i hear you , last year August 1st had some to eat and it was going well.
This season as in other places spring was cold fig shuffle later and plants main crop was delayed appearing.

Pete I know they sell them at produce stands here- they are most often celeste or black mission, do you have any produce stands in your area?

gaint? haven't seen them since i left nyc 30 yrs ago. i thought about local market.. like farmer's market, but if i'm having issue with my trees in container, what's the chance of farmers getting their crop off the inground trees... it's all doomed.. i'll just have to go and get me some fig newton today.

Pete, I'm planning on give some away at the fig festival in September.  I'm starting to form an opinion in my mind up which fig trees I'd like to keep in pots like Emerald Strawberry, Improved Celeste, Lyndhurst White, Paradiso, Verte, and a few others.  But I love the self watering pots.  They can make one forget about a tree for a few days. Some trees just out grow others.  I'm slowly moving my 3 and 5 gallon trees over to 30g pots this year.  But I do have too many trees.

dennis, i'm planning on going down to the SE fig fest. however, that might change once the school starts. i just volunteered for Assistant Scout Master position at my son's boy scout troop. on top of being a Den Leader for the cub scout pack.. since i'm working wtih new scouts on their rank requirement road map for the 1st class.. not sure what will pop up. but if i can take the day off, i'll drive on down there for visit. :) don't need any more fig trees, but would love to see some of the different figs. i'm sure the figs in NC will ripe by then. i wonder if there is a requirement that will work with going to the fig fest..

Pete, wish I had more, I'd share!

Hey Dennis, I'm looking forward to an Emerald Strawberry report, since it seems to be doing well in NC, and that might be an indication that it will do well in the Piedmont.  This tree is pretty notably finicky about what climate gets it to put out best quality fruit.

harvey, needing and wanting are two different things :) i do want some of the figs.. but do i really need them? x)

Fresh Calimynra have arrived here, about 40% are decently ripe the others I will settle for, some have a nice caramel flavour with a big gob of honey inside, that was only about 20% of them.

Shah8, I've got 2 ES.  One is in a half whiskey barrel and the other is in my orchard.  The one in the barrel is 5' tall and just loaded with large figs.  I don't recall tasting any from this tree last year.  But the one in my orchard does not get any winter protection and has a few figs on at the moment.  I'm getting ready to start feeding all my container trees a gallon of fish emulsion every week till the end of Sept.  I have somes trees in my orchard that's just loaded with figs:  Atreano, Atreano Gold, Alma, Strawberry, LSU Champagne, Improved Celeste, and LSU Purple.

The first year my ES fruited it was in a pot and the figs were acidic.  But that Fall, I planted it in my orchard and the figs were super fantasticly amazing!  So, it grows very well in our climate.

Pete,

I thought I was the only one with this problem.  Last year but July 19th I had canned 34 pints of figs.  This year, as you said with yours, they aren't even near ripe yet.  I'm sure hoping they are ready by mid-August.  We are down to our last 4 jars of last years preserves.  =(
