I need help for Zone 6b fig trees

Hi there, does anyone know what type of fig trees are good for zone 6B?

George
Welcome to the forum, there are some good forum members in your neck of the woods so that information will come fairly easy.  It may not be a hardiness issue as much as a ripening period, especially if you keep them in containers.  Good luck.

Nordland, Hardy chicago, MvsB, Rdb, Petes honey, Brown turkey, purple magnolia, sal's g, thats all i can thing of off the top of my head. right now i am testing cold hardiness on desert king as well. will know more come spring.

I grow all of mine in ground, with out winter protection at this point. some may require a little protection. if you chose to grow potted then your list will increase, as potted figs can be moved into a cool basment or unheated shed for winter cover. though they may still need a blaket if the temps dip below freezing.

the ones i listed first will do fin unprotected after three years in ground. hardy chicago, and nordland for sure require no protection at all, mine havent had any and im in 6B illinois. still get good crops. my petes honey had slight protection from wind only the first year and nothing sence.

hope this helps.
Dave

Hello George,

Welcome to this wonderful forum that's filled with so much useful information about figs, and fig growing.

Do you drive?  If yes, in the coming season, get on the Northern State Parkway, and go pay a visit to Zaino's Garden Center, in Westbury.  They will stock some fruiting-size trees, and you'll hit the ground running when you buy larger fig trees that will ripen fruit THIS year.  They usually stock: "Atreano-Gold"..one of the best 'whites" that money can buy..."Black Mission" (great!)..."Brown Turkey" (you can do better)...Petite Negri/Violet de Bordeaux...and, a few others.  I live on the Bronx side of the Throggs Neck Bridge, and "Atreano" has survived, unprotected, in a container, since 2007....and, gets better each year.

That's a good start.  Good luck.

Frank
