I need some help...

I've been trying to find someone to sell me a fig tree, or some cuttings. So far, I've not had any luck.
I wouldn't know a fig, if it fell on my foot, so I don't know what to ask for. I just want a good looking tree, with good fruit. I've only tasted a fig once, and that was a week ago; someone said it was a dried turkey something. Tasted good.
I want to plant a fig at my home in Nevada, and another at my winter home in Mexico.
I don't know when is the best time for cuttings, but I'll be heading south to Mexico in about another month. Temperature holds 80 to 85 degrees all winter, down there.
So...can anyone sell me something?
Thanks,
jim

Well, traditionally, folks that I've seen come here with their first post being a plea for cuttings or plants often end up being scammers, so I don't recommend it as a great way to introduce yourself.  Welcome all the same.

There are a plethora of nurseries all over the USA that will sell you trees, and if you've read any of the threads on this forum (i.e. if you made any effort to read and put any time into this forum), you'd see a thread from the last couple of days explaining how you could get up to 15 varieties of FREE cuttings from UC Davis in California this spring.

For nurseries, there is a fine list of them at the Figs4Fun 'resources' page, click on any of the names in the 'nursery list' section:

http://figs4fun.com/basics_Resources.html

I do not recommend buying anything with 'Turkey' in the name.  Ask questions about the types of figs that are out there before you make a purchase choice.

Good luck.

Well...I can't say that I'm traditional in any way. And don't know how long I have to hang around before I'm not a scammier.
I didn't come to you guys to try any scam of any kind; I came and offered cash.
I have contacted two of your members in the last two weeks, asking questions, trying to get information about what fig would be good for me; one tree in a tropical location, and one that would have to suffer cold in the winter. Both members told me to come here, so I did, and was classed with scammers, and had no idea I should introduce my self.
I have been pressed for time lately, and have contacted a couple nurserys, and have been quoted prices, up to 60 bucks for a fig tree; I don't need a 60 dollar fig tree. I don't know if you guys have realized it or not, but with this econmy, there's not too much loose money around.
I spent a couple hours on this website, and never did find a tree or cutting I could buy right away.
When I head to Mexico next month, I will travel three states here, one international border, and two state borders in Mexico. I will have to smuggle any trees or cuttings across each border, so I can't bring large trees; cuttings are much better.
But what I did do...something I didn't want to do, was buy some fig trees off Ebay. I have had real good luck dealing with ebay, but have heard the horror stories.
I did come here and asked questions about figs, and I do admit I was hoping for free information from you, but I see in your answer, you didn't answer my questions, so I guess we're even.
Oh, yeah...the "turkey" fig I mentioned, was Brown Turkey Fig. I'll take your advice and not buy one.
Sorry to upset you guys; it was unintential.

Hi Jim, and welcome. You might try doing a search on the forum (upper right) for "sellers" and see if you find any good sources. The following thread has some good leads as well:

There is a link on the upper left, just below the "Figs 4 Fun Forum" title (or banner, or whatever it's called), for the Encanto Farms Nursery, in San Diego. The owner,  Jon, is also the F4F forum moderator; He might even be right on your way if you're heading south.

Another possibility is to keep your eyes peeled on your travels, and when you see a promising fig tree in someone's yard, stop and ask them about it. If you like what they tell you about it, see if they will let you take a few cuttings. I should think you could grow some great figs in Sinaloa. Good luck!

Jim,

On the main page of this forum, there's a link to Best Figs for Your Location, link provided here.  There are a few varieties mentioned there for your area in the US, but not for Mexico.  I think you might try the same variety for both places.

Hello Jim welcome

Most of the people on here are friendly and giving ,taking there time to get to know one another. But many people have been burned on this site, whether it be in trades or for money.

I understand you come on here offering money for cuttings but people still feel like they can get burned.

The best I can tell you is to buy trees from some nurseries and plant them where you are now. Then take some cuttings off those trees and take them with you.

Money is tight for sure but maybe some on here will be generous enough to sell or give to you.

Community feel is very important here as well as contributions-i.e experience with trees and growing from cuttings, pics of trees and fruit and the like.

This is a great site for info and help. We have to get to know you first.

People float in and out, lurking.

We had a recent problem with a fellow member who was on here for all of 2 days and bombarded me and about 20 others with requests for cuttings. When I said yes, I thought I was being nice. Then I got the same generic PM message 2 more times. At that time I pulled my offer and I'm still a bit bummed about the experience.

I am not saying you are the same.

I'm just saying- Join in, read the past forum posts and ask questions.
