I Rolled the Dice and I Won....Grafting

Well, I received a Black Madiera Cutting from UC Davis and decided to cut into 3 pieces and graft it to my Conadria tree. Well, they all took, Hooray. I also did the same with the Col de Dame cutting, still waiting on results. I cut down my potted Conadria tree down from 4 feet down to about 3 feet and injected the cuttings onto it and have inside the house, to not dry out.  Feel like I won the Lottery.  On a related topic: The outside grafts, 90 pct loss, to heat.

Wow, I hope they do well for you.  I agree with Martin...pics man!

What method did you use?

Here are the Pics. I cut the Madiera into a slant on both sides and then skimmed back the bark of the root stock at a parallel, down the side.

Here is a stock photo from the internet.  I skimmed the cutting long on one side and short on the other. I taped the cutting onto the root stock and then wrapped with Saran Plastic wrap. Then I wrapped again with green tape.

Thats good to hear Armando! I lost all my out door grafts with the exception of the chip T bud grafts. They are all still alive and seem to be doing good. Its been over a month and they are the only ones left! All the cleft grafts and chip grafts failed. Lost my only hope this season for CDDN. That was the only  one I really wanted to take! Hope they grow well for you and post some more pics once they start growing.

That's great Armando - Nice work!

That's awesome armondo, its gonna be one heck of a tree. When is it going to go outside?

Lovely news Armando, all power to you my friend, finally someone thought a way to lessen freakin pot amounts...LOL

Great Job Armando!! You got some nerve my friend, I would probably would have started out grafting Brown Turkey First...LOL  :)

Good job Armando. I might try this when my trees are a bit older. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Everyone,......... Frank, yeah I don't know what I was thinkin...LOL  ( I had a Plan B )...LOL   Just thought that if it worked, I would be ahead of the game.
On thinking about all the grafting I have done in Jan. Feb and March, I haven't figured what I did right. (the only thing about the UC Davis Black Madiera cutting, was that it looked so healthy).
Shailesh, grafting for me is still a game of chance.  I have been having great results in rooting cuttings by placing them in a clear plastic water bottle with the lid off, with about 3 oz of water. Having about 90 pct success rate.

Are all these cuttings grafted onto the same tree?  I mean both BM & CdD?

Do you use anything to sanitize or seal the graft?

I'm trying to learn as I have limited space for trees, and I have a dwarf pear tree that I want to graft some varieties onto.

Thanks for the pics!

Phil, I am brand new to grafting, think Harvey knows a lot more than me. Grafted the CdD onto other trees. I just felt, that I had to do the grafting fast. Didn't want to place cutting in a cup of water. Wanted to cut and immediately graft. Used a clean razor and I didn't seal the graft with any substance. A person told me the secret to success is to avoid air pockets. Also, I grafted in the evening, when it was cool in temperature.

Armando is a big success. Congratulations.

Hi Armando,
Well done. Now be careful when moving the tree around to not split yourself the grafted piece and the trunk.

Also when grafting be careful  not to touch the area you have cut, the salts in your hands and fingers can cause failure, good job on the grafts though, I hope your CdDB is also successful.

Very cool, thanks!

Update: May 3rd, Well I believe its been 30 days approximate, when I started the grafts. I was concerned about mold taking hold, so I am starting to unwrap them, It is looking Good. Have a question before I unwrap the other 2 grafts. I see some minor mold, I started using mouthwash. I stopped, decided to ask my friends on this forum. What would you use to clean them off..?????

physan 20. or just try wiping off.

Thank You Pete, Don't have physan 20, will use water and a drop or two of bleach, Thanks...will do tomorrow morning.

Thanks for the info , i will try the jujube grafting indoors for a better graft take percetage.

Picture Day...LOL   Looking back, what did I do right...????   Well looking at it closely, I did some very nice cuts of the cutting, so it attached almost perfectly to the rootstock. Also the temperature has to be cool to avoid drying out when attaching.  Thanks Everyone..!!!! For the input and great advice. Note: on the UC Davis Col de Dame grafts, lost one, but the other two took...hoooray.
