I see figs everywhere now

I've been driving around trying to learn my way around the Mooresville, NC area and I see fig trees everywhere.  These are big trees and are totally leafing out.  Obviously they were not bothered by the cold winter.  Can't wait to see what they produce.

Yes.  I will try and get a picture of the big one I saw today

Hi Schaplin,
Once your eyes know what to look for, you can spot them easily without even doing it on purposes.
That happens to me here as well, especially at this time of the year, as other trees are not completely leafed out or have been pruned.
I myself spotted two big ones in some backyards... Funny . Our brain lies to us and does not show us what we don't care for ...
That is why a man can spot some woman's forms quicker than anything else - and that is used on purposes at marketing level.

I read an article saying that without even doing it on purposes, we educate our brain with our hobbies, and it will spot, things he knows and recognizes, much more quicker ...

sharon,

you need to tell me where they are :) i work 5 min from morrisville. i'm sure they are mostly common type sold around here, but who knows. there might be some interesting unknowns. once things settle down here, i might have to do drive by fig hunting... take pix and keep record of which ones looking more promising..

I can drive around here for hours and never spot one single fig tree! I think people have them in their back yards.

I agree.  In the Charlotte area....my neighborhood, there are at least 7.  You have to know what to look for.  Most are right up against a shed or house.  In my opinion they are planted TOO CLOSE to the structure!  Most are just Brown Turkey and Celeste.  Folks around here get their trees from Lowes or Home Depot.  Most have a nice vase shape to them and never been pruned.  My neighbor down the street has a nice Brunswick that he started from a cutting.  He just plugged in his yard 2 years ago and it grew.  Lucky devil!  Today that tree is 3' tall and looks nice.  He dumps a lot of lime on it every year.  It has a nice leaf pattern.  I did find one that is not Brown Turkey or Celeste.  I got several cuttings from it because 4 years ago, it was loaded with brebas and they started to dry on the tree in June.  The figs tasted like candy!  I call it PG.

i'm finding out what i'm looking for. found about handful in raleigh, cary and durham. not most of them are deep in their property. all being cared for. i don't think i want to go knock on there door. house gun is big here and we have castle law.

Pete, if you are seriously interested in them, put a note in the mailbox explaining your interest with your name, phone no and email address. They might blow you off but might also be willing to trade or share.

Pete
I can't believe you work in Mooresville as that is where I live now.  I went by the house again today but couldn't stop.  If it is a fig and it sure looks like one then it is well over 10 foot tall.  The house it is next to is a ranch and it is about 5 foot over the roof line.  I have to work at the greenhouse tomorrow so I may not get to take a picture until later in the week.

Be carefull Schaplin, the owner might be taking a beer in the evening under the trees :) .

jds, beer is fine.. it might be moonshine, mountain dew, white lightening.. really good stuff.. with shotgun on his lap. wait.. that was in south carolina..

sharon,

i work at RTP. my wife works in morrisville. so we are all round this area. but with kids' schedule, don't usually get to look for fig trees too often. saw a huge one in cary few days ago, but that one's too deep inside of the property for me to go take a look.

right in front of NCSU, there is a church with what looks to be a 3-4 yr old tree.. of it might be killed to ground every winter. i'll have to drop by in summer to see what it is.
