I still have green wood on all my 1st year trees. Am I in trouble? Temps dropping into the 30's at night here. Will be in the freezing temps by next month. I thought all of my wood would be hardened off by now. Last fertilized the first week of Sept. Too late and I won't make that mistake again.

Where are the trees? In pots or in ground ?
How high are they ?

I have the same problem also my tips are still green ....but I have moved them all into my garage

They are in 5 gallon pots. Most are between 12 and 18 inches tall. About half of the height is green.

Temps into the thirties will help them harden off.  A killing frost will kill green tips.

Younger trees, esp. first year trees tend to continue growing and hold onto leave longer than a mature tree. Can't really hurry the process. Freezing temps will probably harm the greenest wood.

I'm glad you asked this. I am holding off shipping some cuttings because they haven't really hardened off yet. At what point would the wood be considered hardened-off? If all the leaves have fallen, or if the wood is not green still? Mine are in pots in my garage now.

If your garage stays above freezing it's no real big deal. Last year I had one tree that had branches that for the most part never did harden off, I think the green finally lignified this spring once I moved it back out. Cuttings don't have to really be hardened off, though they are less susceptable to mold when hardened off. When they have dropped their leaves and gone dormant they are good to go, but I would ask the people you are sending cuttings to when they plan on rooting them. That way you can send them when yhour freinds are ready and don't have to worry about storing them in the fridge unless they want to do that.

Thanks everyone. My garage stays pretty warm, probably in the 50's. I'm a bit worried that will bring them out of dormacy, but it sounds like the lack of light and the time of year will likely keep them dormant for the winter (from what I read in another post)

My garage stayed in the 50s all winter and came out of dormancy just fine.  I only had about 5 trees at the time though.

All my figs had green leaves till about a week+ ago!
Then came a sudden cold snap - most instantly droped
all the leaves - less a few re-potted young sheltered ones.
This is mid-Nov; time for me to pull all in my garage...

I wouldn't worry too much. My unknown Italian fig-trees still have their leafs and green wood .
The leafs should have already fallen, but because of the warmer autumn, the leafs still seem to be doing photosynthesis which hopefully, will help the trees to harden their wood ... At least, the trees stopped popping up new leafs and figs .I already had two morning-frosts ... But I hope the leafs will fall quickly so that I can protect the trees a bit .
All my trees are in ground so I don't have the garage option .

move them to some place where they won't freeze. like garage. 1st yr fig trees don't go dormant easily. i remember first few cuttings i rooted held on to the leaves through out the winter in my garage.
