I stole a cutting from a local green house…

I was visiting a public green house in the Montreal and I came across a fig tree! There was no one around and I was not able to find the people in charge. The temptation was to strong so I snatched a small cutting!

Besides admitting my crime I have a question.

The cutting came from actively growing tree. In this situation I usually store the cutting from two to three weeks in a fridge. From what I read it induces the cuttings into dormancy…

Now I am wondering if this is really necessary or I could just plant it now.

Thanks!

I cannot comment on the refridge part, but uh oh the fig gods saw you and i bet you will soon be on you tube or what ever they call that site.
In the mean time slap your hand for punishment!  ; )

The fig will grow if you provide the same condition of light and warmth as in the greenhouse.
If not your fig will need to be cilled for 2 weeks, and then started.
Good luck

Hello neighbour. Send me an email so I can send you a couple of cuttings. My plants are small but I will make them a bit smaller to get you some cuttings (& a small rooted plant). You have to bear the postal cost ( and promise not to take a chance like you mentioned). Then we both have to thank in absentia those who had sent me the cuttings in the past that enabled me now to share with you.

Thanks for answering my questions!

And yes I am beginning mercy from the Fig Gods.

Seriously I am not in the business of steeling fig cuttings. It was a shame since as there were clear signs on the tree that it was just pruned.  If only I could have found the staff I would have asked if they still had the branches in the garbage/compost…

OttawanZ5, thank you very much of your offer it is very kind

I already have a Celeste, Pied de boeuf and an unknown type which I received from an Italian gentlemen when I was living in Vancouver.  If you only have a few figs I prefer not to diminish your supply. However, I would be very glad to send you cuttings from what I have.

Not condoning thievery, but now that the crime has been committed, see http://figs4fun.com/ ande read about rooting cuttings under "Growing Tips". It works for green and non-dormant cuttings, as well as dormant. No need to refrigerate.

Thanks for the added confirmation.

After reading UBC Garden Forum and Gardenweb I was confused since a while. In some posts people stated that you absolutely had to store the cuttings in a fridge.

With the few cuttings I had I never dared derogate from this rule.

Montreal, i have never stored fig sticks in fridge, i think maybe some might to root when the time is better for that individual (time ). Otherwise i see no reason , i could be wrong but........
