I think I may have a fig problem...

The fig fever has hit really hard this year, with cuttings filling in as Christmas gifts to myself, and now it is becoming work, haha.

Did anyone else go a little overboard this year with cuttings? What do yalls rooting setups look like?

Fig fever hit me too, I asked my wife that my stocking stuffers be cuttings. I definitely gathered some of my wants, still have a bunch I want to get before I start rooting in a month or so. How many cuttings do you think you have now?

Your setup looks great. You should start a grow log, documenting the progress.

That is really a big bug that hit you this year. Rooting out these cuttings is the only remedy now.

I feel your pain, as a newbie I too over indulged. Wifey is taking it okay at the moment, but there are still more coming in the mail. My only hope is to get the mail before she does :)

The grow log sounds like a neat idea! I guess maybe a google spreadsheet would work?

Of the named varieties I'd guess 150 cuttings, unknown Hot Springs, AR (found on vacation) 23, unknown Paris, TX maybe 150, and a flat of seeds (Sals EL and Grantham (?) Royal) started.  On the seeds there are about 8 little babies that just sprouted this week !

I am thinking of doing some of the unknown Paris, TX for postage to share the love and take a little weight off of my shoulders, haha.  I'll have to get my paypal setup Monday to receive money and do a practice run at the post office to see what they might cost.

I think recruiting the wife to supply the cuttings was well played, haha.

This is what I meant by grow log, nick has done a great job with documenting his last 2 seasons.http://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post/2015-season-douglassvillepa-7213069?trail=50&highlight=2015+season

Let me know if you want to partake in my unknown brooklyn offering in my thread ;) . Not to feed your addiction or anything, we are all enablers here.

Matt

I know about the fig fever too. The wife thinks I'm sick in the head for the amount of fig trees I have compared to the size of my property.

I don't see any problem.. I held back a lot on getting cuttings this summer, I wanted all of them! But I tried to focus mainly on one's people said would do better in my climate. I said tried... Getting greenhouses set up for the ones that probably won't fruit here in the constant rain. :p

You don't have a problem unless your fig varieties (Not cuttings) number goes over 100.  Based on what I'm seeing your friends and neighbors and the area schools will love you.
It might take a while but you could always apply for a nursery license and sell your fig trees at farmers' markets.

My set up is every sunny window that I'm allowed to use.

You mentioned a Variety from Paris TX. Do you have pictures of the tree or fruit?

P.S. The tree location might help He he (I own a property in that area).

Meg,

I was just saying that parcletefarms can start their own grow log, nothing special. It's just a thread that you can use to document your grow progress. Like you can start your own new thread called "sm)yfigs 2015/2016 grow log" and it will be to show your weekly progress or monthly progress, daily is crazy.

The tree was at my coworkers Grandparent's house and has been there anywhere from 15-30 years unprotected and unmaintained.  It was about 10 ft tall and 8ft wide. The ripened fruit looked close to this :

Here are some pictures of the actual leaves:

Brooklynmatty,

I am debating the cuttings you are offering.  I think I need to get all of these ones tucked in before I bite off any more, haha.  If you want to try some of unknowns I got, then I'll send you a pack.

The fruit looks similar to the one my Celeste tree produces. It was purchases from Home Depot in Austin TX.
I just took a picture of the last leave on my tree just to give you an idea.

We all have been through this dilemma! It does not get any better until a year has passed... You are for sure a "Fig Zombie" so be careful and don't loose your House,Car, and possibly your Wife because of this addiction   : )

Hi Frank, I still have relapses. LOL

I'm jealous! I have very limited space; and, since this is my first year of starting all my new varieties from cuttings, I'm concentrating on just three varieties. I'm still fighting my urge to add one more, but I don't think I could go beyond that for now. Having the ability to do that many trees is just a fond dream for me. :)
