I WANT more

Yes it is true, I thought I could restrain myself and be content with the one tree.  I WAS WRONG!!!!!!  There I admitted it.  Everyone here is talking about all of the different types of trees they have - tempting and teasing me.  I can only take so much!!!!!!!!  lol

So, what can I do about it?  I can't trade my tree out - it's not big enough and I have only had one little (well, not really little) breba, AND it is my first year with it;)

What I CAN offer is some Stella D'oro Day Lilly root stock.  They do need to get in the ground soon.  I planted the one in the picture around March 14, and this picture was taken on May 14.  It took a little while to start growing, I think because the ground was still cold.  They grow about 10-12" tall and they do spread and may also need to be divided in 3 years or so.

If anyone is interested please pm me and we can come to mutual terms.

Thanks and hope this is the start for some good trading!

JoAnn,

List some.varieties that you are looking for. Some might trade with, and some will offer you cuttings.. but if they don't know what you want... it's kinda hard :)
Pete

I am open to anything that could take the TX heat. I plan on keeping them in pots for awhile.  My experience with varieties is limited to the family tree - unknown small purple fig, an uncles unknown white fig, some while at work from the wholesalers  and some I had from Whole Foods.

I have to say I never met a fig I didn't like!  :)

I find it easiest to do this.  Find the ten most awesome looking dogs and make a wish list.  There is a wish list here already - you may start with that thread and see what others are asking for, go to the Variety database, look at pics and see if it looks interesting to you.  If you need more info, don't hesitate...

There is a great wealth of information both here and 'out there' about different varieties of figs.. the pictures are pretty, it's fun reading, though confusing, and it really will help to narrow your choices. LOL, or should I say increase the number of figs you want.

Since I started doing my 'research' on figs, what I want has changed. Great taste is my primary concern, and a secondary consideration is color. I seem to be developing a strong attraction to the darks, but am not limiting myself.

It's all fun. :)

joann,

when i started few year ago, first thing i got was VdB. some judges other figs by this one. VdB is easy to come by. most online vendors  have this one. some members might have spare cuttings of this. i will have some at the end of this year. all my branches are right now busy getting figs ready for me. if you don't get an offer or trade, let me know and i can send  you some.. it will be around this winter/spring.

Kathleen's Black, i heard they are good. it's the only tree that i'm able to trade with. no one wants my Paradiso Gene or VdB.. well one member did want my VdB providing it's from Paradise Nursery, and it is. i'll have cuttings for this in end of june, early july if you want to wait.

Paradiso Gene. i have this one, but i won't have cuttings this year. it tastes like some where between watermelon and honey dew. rather refreshing fig.

those three are what i started with when i first get into this about 3 yrs ago. i did some reading and posted if anyone has them, found a fig nursery that was willing to sell me three plants. rather inexpensive price at that.

also in fall, you can place order with UCD for cuttings. you can get ton of good stuff there. only thing is they are heavily infected with FMV. tho, not many cares too much about FMV.

in spring, jon will post scion list from encanto farm. i always miss this great chance. jon provides very good scions from what i hear. i'll be watching this forum everyday to make sure i get it coming year.

talking about UCD, lot of people consider Black Madeira one of the best. you can get cuttings for Black Madeira from UCD. problem is, they are hard to root, and hard to grow. rooting wasn't hard for me. i'll have to see how hard it is to grow this year and so on. some call this "holy grail" of fig.

let me know if you want Kathleen's Black and VdB cuttings. i'll have KB by late june/early july. i'm sure you can get VdB anywhere. if you don't get an offer, let me know around coming spring.

i forget things... too many stuff going on. PM me if i forget something. easier for me to keep track of it that way.

Jo-Ann, there are some very good fig friends in TX. Write them and I am sure they would help you to have a nice collection. Well, I got the fig bug disease years ago and when I know of a tasty variant, I am not just tempted, I wanna have it. That is why I am still lurking around this forum. It is a great hobby and I feel awesome tinkering around the fig variants in the different seasons.

For reference:

Wish list (which unfortunately seems to regularly get bumped by fleeting newbies trolling for freebies)

F4F Variety database (with many pics of hundreds of varieties)

Custom Google search (for the phrase "Favorite fig" at this site)

I'd start with checking what's on people's wish list and looking at the pictures of those varieties at the variety databse.  Then look at the list of favorite figs and do the same.  Should help to develop a list of desirable figs to hunt out.

The reason I posted this way was to be able to get a few varieties and be able to offer something in return - I'm not holding both hands out that are empty; I don't expect anyone to send something without me offering something in return.

Putting together a wish list is a great idea, but as Jason mentions it seems like people looking for freebies.  It will also take time since I have been resisting the urge to get more fig trees I have not been looking to build a list.

The roots I have will not last, they will have to be planted or they will die.  I will send them out and trust the deal will be fulfilled at the appropriate time of year.

Again, if anyone is interested in this kind of trade, pm me, these day lillies are pretty hardy and will grow just about anywhere with at least 4 hours of full sun.

Sometimes people give you things just for the fun of it.  Noss had good advice - find great figs that ripen at different times.  All figs like your climate.  If someone gets a reputation as a giver here, others give to them.  So if you let people give you figs you're helping them.  I think you should get a desert king for early brebas.  PM me your address so I can mail you some cuttings.

Hey Jo-Ann i responded to your pm ill cut you some local trees (not mine) mine are to small at this point let me know if your interested

Thanks!!  Will do.

Forgot to add - how can I find great figs?  A lot of the info almost seems to be contradicting!!  The tree grows such a way "here" and the fruit is like this "here" but don't know what it will be in your area due to climate, soil, humidity, sun ........  It's enough to make your head spin round and round..........lol lol

what is this urge to get more fig trees.. i have 14 different variety on hand. 6 more coming in.. 2 on wish list.. UCD orders i'm thinking about.. i really need help. i need to keep the number in check.. i think i'll stop at 30.. good round number.

Pete - 30!  Yikes - way too many for me.  I ended up with that many bonsai with saplings.

Reading what everyone says about their trees!

I was also thinking of making a "fig hedge" after reading a few posts.  It started me thinking that sounds like an interesting idea!  That would take several trees and then I could have several varieties.
