I went rogue!!

Okay, so I got impatient and freaked out about mold and decided to do half the cuttings I have in water, despite most posts saying not to. Yes, i'm the one who wants to push the big red DO NOT PUSH button. But so now I have nubs on the cuttings, and I was going to wait to put them in some sort of a potting mix until I saw longer roots, but have now read that maybe planting them now would be better, before the roots are longer and more fragile.

What do I do? And would a regular potting mix work or should I do a cactus mix or part potting part perlite? And apologies for the sideways pic.... (and yeah, one of the cuttings has a 4 inch branch already with leaves...not sure if I was supposed to leave it, but it was so pretty I let it do it's thing.)

There are a many ways to root cuttings. This is one, it is just that there can be troubles switching from water to growing medium. I topped a tree late last summer and rooted the top just fine in a cup of water.

After that one post where cyberfarmer's kid started cuttings that way, I tried it with a couple VDB cuttings that were not growing according to plan, and they now show those root nubs too.  I need another VDB like a hole in the head, but this is just a test, and this town needs fig trees!  lots of houses in town have roses, and I'd love to trade a living fig cutting for a rose cutting I want.

Nothin' wrong with rogue!

I suppose you can put 1 in a light airy mix and leave the other as is as(in water) an experiment if you like.

That one on the right looks like it's drying out to me, from what i can tell i the picture.  Whenever I start seeing those verticel ridges, it seems the cutting never survives.

DesertDance-
I would love to have a VDB, and I could send you cuttings from a Souvenir de la Malmaison climbing antique rose if you are interested.

Sherry, enable your pm's.  Go to your profile and enable PM's from members.  Emails too.  I don't know where you are, but all my figs are in full growth mode.  I'm not comfy sending green cuttings.  Would rather wait till the figs and roses go dormant.  Would that be OK?  If I get a rogue VDB to root in water... can you get a rogue rose to root in water?  Just curious.  I will have tons of dormant cuttings next year, and I'm curious about the climber... just not sure where to put it.  We have 1.5 acres, and about 3/4 is fully fenced and irrigated, but there is that rogue part!

I'm in on this Rogue thing!!

Hi jujigirl,
I would keep them in the water until I would see real roots ...

Thanks everyone! I'm so torn about planting them now or waiting for roots. Maybe i'll look for a sign today. ;) By the way, Suzi, we have tons of roses, what kind are you looking for? I bought a VDB so don't need one, but maybe later on I could hook you up with some rose cuttings anyhow. :)

By the way, jdsfrance, you're not a Denver Broncos fan by chance are you? There was someone with a similar user name on the broncos messageboard, just thought i'd ask. :)

OMG!  So after reading this post yesterday, I took one of my treasured Negretta cuttings out of the moss and put it in a glass of water with two wine grape cuttings (2"+ roots), One mint cutting showing roots, and the 2 VDB cuttings.  I figured there must be some rooting hormone in there since they all have roots or initials.  Today, ONE DAY, I checked the Negretta.  Wow!

You can see the water line at the top.  This cutting has done nothing in sphagnum for a month!  Now I have jujigirl's dilemma...

Oh, roses!  Floribundas in bright colors.  Love the knock-outs!  Also, Queen Elizabeth.  That's a beautiful grandiflora in pink.

WOW! Look at that cutting in one day!! So what are you gonna do? :)
I have a ton of David Austin roses. In fact, just took this pic (yes, I'm hijacking my own thread) yesterday of Port Sunlight, which just opened up. 1939508_10152288389146251_1348027414_n.jpg

Wow!  David Austin!  I'm in!  We'll work out some kind of trade by PMs.

The top and bottom of this cutting have been sealed with paraffin to prevent drying out.

I think I'm going to wait for 1" roots, and then I'm going to gently pot the cutting up in a clear plastic cup in a damp mix of more perlite than soil, and put it in a humidity bin.  I will open the bin daily a couple hours for air.  This Negretta cutting HAS to make it!  Once I see leaves and tons of roots on the side of the cup, I'll transition it to less humidity and then I'll put it in a 2 gallon pot in partial sun and watch it grow.  It will go in-ground when it's dormant.
